By looking at the 0 (Zero) counts.
The old one has 6 zeros as the only difference.
1.000.000 = Old one
1 = New one.
I hope this helps. ^.^ |

Qu'est ce que tu pense?
 |
If it has a ton of zeros...it's old
If it has few zeros and says simply, 1 ytl, 5ytl...then it's new.
The new lira would also have ytl (yeni turk lira) on it. |

By the number of Zeroes and the absence of the word Milyon.

"New"( "Yeni" ) is the marker of difference.
NEW TURKISH LIRA is YENI TURK LIRASI and is referred as -even in print on the banknote or change, YTL, a simple abbreviation. The change is called KURUS... There was no kurus prior to the new lira, unless you go back to 50s or something. But they have a different shape, and design. If unfamiliar, check the date. But such old KURUS is not in circulation anyway... |

In late December 2003, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey passed a law that allowed for the removal of six zeroes from the currency (TL), and the creation of the new lira(YTL). It was introduced on 1 January 2005, replacing the previous lira (TL) (which remained valid in circulation until the end of 2005) at a rate of 1 new lira (YTL) = 1,000,000 old lira.
The official name of the currency is "New Turkish Lira". According to the Central Bank, the word "new" (yeni) is only a "temporary" measure. A news agency reported that "new" will be removed on January 1, 2009. The same source also indicated that the banknotes will have "different shapes and sizes to prevent forgery". The issuance of a new highest denomination, 200 lira, is contemplated at the same time. |

New Turkish Lira (Yeni Türk Lirası—YTL) has 6 less zeros so it resembles more typical currencies. Unortunately you cant be a millionaire for a couple US dollars anymore ;-). The best way to tell is to try and spend it. Both currencies were valid during 2005. The good news is that Turkey has gotten its wild inflation so rampant in the 70s and 80s under control and with the conversion to the YTL or new lira has really move forward in stabilizing their economy. |
