How do other countries and their local nationals feel about Americans?

I recently moved to Italy and have heard how Americans are not well liked, seen signs "Americans go home", and we should try to blend in so no one knows. We are planning on traveling all over Europe while living here and would like to know if the anti-American feelings here are prevelant everywhere throughout Europe.

As with every place in the world, Europe is no exception to the rule.. there are ignorant people everywhere! Don´t worry, just enjoy yourself, try to absorb, appreciate and enjoy every country´s culture, be open for other people´s opinions but don´t be embarrassed to display your own (as long as your T-Shirt doesn´t state something stupid.. lol). Europeans usually like to be approached courteous and enjoy good mannered people.. again, this goes for the vast majority and does not apply to everyone unfortunately. Take a couple of minutes to read about the place you want to visit, get a simple language guide and try to show that you´d love to speak the language but simply suck at it - most people will attempt to speak english then! As in most places in the world, a smile will open alot of doors and you will probably meet some great people that are just as openminded and curious about talking to you as you are towards them! Enjoy your stay in Europe and make it worthwhile!!

just remeber everything is related. america isnt the best coutry in the world. not everybody is and want to be as u.
dont be too loud, too ignorand, too easy going, too 'keep smiling' /u might look stupid/, do not show off with money.
wear in restayurant as u shoud look in restaurant, and in church/cemnetary as u should look in church.
always doubt - never think u just know coz u read or lonelyplanet says so...dont be ignorant.
be modest, openminded - just be like a guest a stranger,
EVERYWHERE, ALWAYS
or something...

I don't know about Europe lately, but put it this way: It's always nice to have a T-shirt that says: I'm Canadian or something when traveling around Asia. (sorry to say that, but it's true) There seems to be far more hatred than anything else towards us Americans...although, in some places it can be mixed with a strange sort of "awe" as well. It's been a disappointing and tough lesson for me.

In many countries, people don't like the way the "yankee" always think they are #1 in the world, and want to give other people lessons, while they almost know nothing about other people (nations) and their culture, and more than 1/2 Americans people don't even know where is the US on the world map, many of them ask if life in European countries (like Germany, France, Italy, Denmark ...) is better or the same, or worse than it is in Mexico ... People in other countries know almost every of American famous name (singers, sporters, President, priminister ...), but most Americans know nobody of other nations, even many names are very famous, have been staying in the heart of many people in the rest of the world (try to count yourself with your own fingers how many famous people of other nations you know) ... Some American tourists found themself ridiculous in front of local people about world knowledge...
Every other nation has and is pround of it beautiful and unique culture, but some of its people are just look up at the Americans they see in their country for the Americans wear better cloths than their, and spend the currency that has biger value than their local one (in the 2nd & 3rd world).
There are so much more to say, and better not talk about those nations where people love to live in peace, not in war ...

So, after my oppinion, it would be better when you are out of the US, don't show people that you are Americans, when you are not sure if they like this fact. Some body was right, mostly people like much better the Canadians, because the Canadians don't bother the world.

I went to Paris for the first time last year and had a wonderful time! I will tell you three big things I learned while there.
1. French people do NOT like people who are overbearing and rude. Sadly enough, we Americans DO feel entitled much of the time e.g. we demand faster restaurant service, we're loud and boisterous, we dress too casually in certain places.
2. When traveling, try to even say 'hello' or 'good morning' in their language. We do tend to expect the entire world to speak English. It's THEIR country, after all. Learn a few words and believe me, they'll be much more receptive. Believe me. I took a few years of French so I could actually converse a bit and I was accepted much more readily.
3. I didn't notice this firsthand but many people have told me that French people take pride in the way they look (their slim figures and healthier lifestyle). When they see someone who's overweight, they tend to discriminate. I think this is blatantly wrong of them, if it's true, in opposition to the other two reasons I mentioned.

In Sri Lanka, Americans are very welcome. America joining the war on terror, which Sri Lanka has been fighting for the last two decades with only minimal help from Israel and Pakistan, and the disaster aid after the tsunami have endeared America to many Sri Lankans. Also the State Department urging the terrorists in Sri Lanka to resume peace talks has sat very well with the average Sri Lankan, who is tired of war. American Tourists are known for being big spenders too, so the tourist industry likes them.

Some of the Americans feel that they are Gods. They do not know where is e. g. Spain or Italy ... Also I heard that some of them even do not know that USA has not only one state or countries.
I do not have any trouble with Americans. But I think some of them have to think about themselves and also about the world. Not only Americans but all nations.

If you are onest, quiet and mind your own bussines nobody will bother you. Relax and enjoy your trip, europeans are more tolerable with different cultures than any other people.

To be honest with you, american people are considered stupid in Croatia. That is general opinion (which is not mine, I dont know any American, so I can't judge).
I think it's because people from America don't know much about Croatia. I met a girl who asked me if we have cars here (?!?). She also thought that we live in tents and work in fields.
Croatia is normal European country with little bit lower standard than Western Europe. We all hawe cars, phones, houses, computers, we are going to universities...
