Hi

I am Greek

I learned to drive in a driving school using special driving car

If you search hard inside the traffic you will see training cars. Although most of these cars move in areas outside the city center. The reason: A lesson has duration 45 minutes. You dont want to spend your 45 minutes moving from one corner to another in a high traffic street except if you are on the last lessons.

regards

Greek drivers go through very vigorous tests. They have to demonstrate how to park uphill backing up (um,extremely difficult, kids, don't try this at home:-),parallel parking in very small spaces (just like everyday life on Greek streets)plus all cars are standard.
Driving in Greece can be challenging for a foreigner. It doesn't mean that the drivers are bad, just the roads are extremely small in some towns and there are a lot of uphills and downhills.Considering that all cars are standard, plus the roads, plus the traffic is a miracle there are no more accidents on the roads.
Bottom line: most drivers take vigorous tests for the driver's license, and generally, excluding their bad attitude, are good drivers
PS: If you take a country road outside of the city, you will find alot of driving school cars

Hi. If u think greeks dont know how to drive then u havent been in italy :-) It is obligatory to go to a driving schools .There are some test during the examination like to make a turn backwards, to park and stuff like this that cannot be done in crowded places that's why u hv never seen there L-cars. The teachers prefer places with the minimum traffic.

Driving schools in Greece dont a a specific plate.

They just write on the cars "Σχολή Οδηγων" which is driving school in Greek!!!!!

Whats the point in learning to drive on a Greek island during the summer noisy/busy period when in the winter you will have soooo much time available.

As for the "memorials" someone said or "petite-eglises" (liitle churches) on our roads its because someone really cared for a loved one and took the time to build one!!!

I live on a very small Greek island and there are several driving schools, they also have to use the N plate for new drivers. NOW, the driving here is very bad, so bad that every time I go out in the car I dice with death, sometimes up to 3 near misses a day, this is due to the older generation who have never passed a test and many foreigners who have, ahem, "bought" their licences, the police are starting to clamp down on this now, thank goodness. The other problem here is if that you get stopped for speeding, as long as you know the policeman you get away with it, same goes for drink driving and many other offences. There is no deterrent here to stick to the rules. Can I just add that there are far worse places in Europe, Italy for example, to drive!

To my thumbs downers - sorry but I'm stating facts, my father in law goes drinking with the chief of police and then DRIVES home.

greeks are very good drivers. ive travelled on greek roads and ive never ever been killed. not even once. i was even not killed in athens.
seriously now, i do wish the bikers would wear their helmets. its not hard is it? just put the bloody thing on your head instead of carrying it on your elbow. please. elbows never get brain damage. french kids do it too. wear your helmets you gits, please

Trust me. No matter how they learn it, they do know how to drive. Most of them.

What they don't know is how to behave. In the Netherlands, its quite the opposite: driving schools are tough, traffic cameras are everywhere, drivers do smile, the country is flat, no turns, no up- or downhills... But drivers do get killed without even crash to anyone else...Often they get killed by looking on their satellite route planner...

Now you try to explain me this and then you might also wanna rephrase the question...

Why Greeks behave like this when driving? The answer is simple:

They are still impressed by the "iftoukinitou". Sorry. But that only Greeks would understand.

:)

they dont. and they buy their drivers plate, they dont know anything about highways and have you ever seen a learner on a roundabout? The same things go for cyprus.

1) from relatives there in Athens I understand they have to take driving lessons to get a license plus pay about 500 euros I think she told me.
2) it may seem they are bad but its because there is so much traffic in the cities it is like that in any large one
3) everyone is in a hurry
4) They HAVE to be good drivers or they couldn't drive there because of the small parking areas (if you find one), the busy streets, the people running across streets in front of them..

I drove 3 years for a job in the states, have driven all over the USA but would not even think to drive in Greece....I am not good enough to cope with the immense traffic problems they have, so yes they have to be good drivers.
As for the dinking and driving. In the states they would be arrested for driving DUI, and I have ridden with ones that have been out drinking.....but remember they have also been eating the whole night with the drinking....also not like in the states where ones go only for drinking and get plastered then try to drive home. They just drink and eat to get happier there.

how lame do you think us Greeks are?ofcourse there are driving schools and ofcourse we learn the signs and all that! there are small cars usually a toyota yaris, opel corsa, atos etc with the "L" sign above them or as already stated in an answer above, there are signs on them with the name and contact info of the driving school.

Now it's another thing on how good greek drivers are. let me tell you: they are some of the worst. Greek drivers especially young ones think that they are in some kind of an FI race track. They ignore the signs, ignore the rules. People are being killed because of them. I think researh has shown we are amongst the highest ranks -if not the highest- in the number of accidents in Europe.

It's a shame.

There are schools and there are cars with a big L on top of them, these are school cars. If you haven't seen them it doesn't mean they don't exist.
As for Greeks being bad drivers, this is not due to lack of knowledge of how to drive, but to the disrespect for the rules. Actually, there are some very good and prudent drivers, but the bad ones give the rest a bad name.

lena225
well living in the country, let me reassure you that there are MANY "N" signs on the back window of cars to show there is a novice driver in it... As far as the driving school cars, there are all around - you can see an "L" sign on them...

WHY the question? do you plan to get driving lessons in Greece?
if so, there are some very good schools around...

Hi, I go to Cyprus every year, and only in the past few years have i seen Driving School Cars. I think it's because now Greece is in the EU they now have to adhere to driving standards.
