OK, how do you keep yourself safe now??? Most places in Europe are very safe, but you have to look after yourself (in most big cities around the world). So, what I usually do when I go somewhere (like Little Havanna in Miami, or outside the French Quarter in New Orleans)
1) I wear a bag with zippers and keep them closed! And wear it mainly in front of you...
2) I put my money all over the place, some in my pockets, some in my wallet, some in my bag.
3) Leave valuables in a safety deposit box in your hotel, or wear them in a moneybelt under your clothes!
4) Don't flash your money. I never take out a lot of bills... I go into one of my pockets and take out 1 or 2...
5) Don't wear fancy jewelery, like those typical American Massive diamonds. It's like writing on your forehead... Hello... mug me please!
6) Don't hang your bag or coat with money on your chair or put it on a table with your back turned to it, It's so easy to steal it then. Hang it around your knee, or keep it in your lap or around your shoulder.
7) Try to act local, or at least not as a bloody tourist
Good luck and keep safe! |

Use a money belt. Don't use a fanny pack.
And if you see a sign saying "watch out for pickpockets" or something similar don't check your wallet. It tells the pickpockets where to look... |

Aside from carrying bags with secure flaps (zippers, not magnetic attachments), and making sure it's in front of you all the time, you should be hyper-vigilant in crowds, keep your hand on the bag, don't carry large amounts of cash.
You could also use a body wallet or waist pack.
Be aware that there are motorcycle thieves, in that they drive by and slash the strap of the purse. You can get purses with steel reinforced straps. |

Wallet in your front pocket, not back pocket. Doesn't look as good but safer. Same as guarding against pickpocketers in America. |

Don´t have much money on you, a money belt in front of you is good. But keep most of your money in a safety box in your hotel. The thiefes are very clever. My mother was robbed once in Paris and she did not notice it until she was at her hotel. Avoid crowds, there the pickpockets usually "work, or nightclubs for example (if you are on a nightclub, always watch your drink, someone can put some drops of poison there, don´t want to scare you, but it´s best to be careful). |
