How is the anti-American sentiment in Istanbul, Turkey?

I'm thinking of going to Istanbul on vacation. Should I be worried about the anti-American sentiment there, or is it not as big of a deal as people talk it up to be?

No there's nothing to worry about. Most of the Turkish population don't approve US politics.

But Turkish people are friendly to the visitors what ever their nationality is.Just don't treat people disrespectfully. You will be fine.

Have a nice holiday.

As long as you don't demonstrate the typical american ignorance and arrogance, you won't face any problems. It is not worse than it is in france.

I am Greek - Italian. And i can assure you that despite our objections as to U.S.A. politics, we south mediterraneans, Greeks and Turks included, can distinguish between political interests and common people. We may demostrate before an embassy, but we are open and friendly to people regardless their origin, unlike some other countries like Germany, France and, ofcourse, U.S.

It is not a big deal, go enjoy yourself take a lot of pictures and when you come back nobody will believe how much fun you had anyway. There is no anti american sentiment btw

You'll be fine. One time when I was little on the fourth of July, I decided to wear red, white, and blue in Turkey. Oh yeah, I was also carrying an American flag...just to see what everybody's reaction would be. I got a few stares, but everybody didn't treat me any differently. Some people actually thought it was funny. So to say that Turkey is anti-American, is incorrect.

Don't worry about it. This people are kind and istanbul is a good choice.

Trotsky vs Kerensky- НекIо!
Ah you know that guy who burns the American flag while tossing his fist violently in the air , Americans think that in every single country with a Muslim population has one of those men lol

Don't worry a whit, you'll find yourself silly for asking this question after you visit Turkey.

Enjoy your vacation! (as you will indeed :)

You should be more worried about pesty carpet salesmen. Anti-American sentiment? It doesn't exist in the streets. Just don't get into discussions about the "freeing" of Iraq and the Armenian genocide lies. You may receive dirty looks and dirtier words.

Edit: Oy, Ankara Kale, why don't you just shut your trap before the ugly word comes out? You may well be swearing to a teenager! Youngsters post here, too, you know! I'm ashamed of you.

When I was in Istanbul recently in March, I did not have any troubles at all as an american. On occasion I did hear some people vent their frustrations with regards to having visas denied. It will help if you don't try to dress as a typical american (or german) tourist, with: Birkenstock sandals, socks pulled up high, a Hawaiian Shirt, camera hanging around your neck, hiking shorts, a big stupid hat, backpack, and just avoid an american flag or conversations about how you think the US is the best country in the world. Around Sultanahmet there are so many tourists, everybody there is acostumed to seeing Americans, just be prepared to hear about how they dislike your goverment, president ect, policies.

We only dont like the terrorists.

Have a nice holiday.
