How many children does the average Greek family have?

Past and Present? Are there incentives to have more kids (baby bonuses? Tax relief?)

In my family there are 3 of us. Two older brother, and then me. With my mom, she is the 4th child. With 2 older brother and a sister before her, and a younger brother after her.

How big are Greek families now?

About forty years ago it was 3. Now the average is one or two at the most. Times are hard. Children are expensive.

In my generation, you can rarely find a greek family having 3 kids. All of my best friends (3) about my age have 1 kid as I do (I have one kid and don't think I'll have another one), most of the people have two kids.
There are many families, especially the young ones that bring up their kids without any help and while they are working full time, that have one kid.

Well my grand father had 13 children my dad was second last.out of the 13 only 7 survied...due tot he spanish flu @ the time. MY dad had 6 kids altogether..in cluding a still born and his first dying from a serve case of miss diagnosis, i have 3 sisters.. the oldest had 2 children.. the youngest who live in athens.. both have only 1 child each..i frozen my zygotes..for the future....but hey ..i could have 24 ..lol... ..but as you can see from the early 1910 till now the greek family is decreasing by @ least my example.. ..how ever my brother in laws younger brother is a rabbit... and his wife omg..they have wait for it... 11 kids now...but he is lucky he is in oz....YOU couldnt support 11 kids in greece now no matter what ...impossible..

I would say 2-3 kids each Greek family. There are 2 of us

The average is 1 or 2.
There are 2 of us in my family.
In my mother's family: 8 children, but 2 died while they were babies.
In my father's family: 2 children, but only because my grandfather died young and of course, my grandmother never married again.

Greek families are just like American families, with an average amount of children, about 2-4. In the rural villages the numbers tend to grow larger. I would also like to point out for the asian guy that we greeks arent muslim and dont follow the quran, but are greek orthodox and follow the evaggelio.(bible)

According to the CIA world factbook the current birthrate is 1.37 which is pretty low by European standards.

In the past was around 3.Now, I think is 2

In my family we are 4.
In my parent's family are:
Mom + siblings=5 ,dad +sibling =2 (another 5 unoborned=miscarriage)
granma+ 7 sibling ,grandpa + 5 sibling, grandma2+ 4 siblings, grandpa 2 + siblings

Lots of !!!!!

The average is around 3. Times are hard now. Economically, you don't want to overdo it and have more than 4 kids because, it's hard to support kids at this age.

I mean, years ago, it was normal to have more than 5 kids. My mom is one of 7. My grandpa is one of 12. It just goes to show you how much times have changed.

Lena
2-3

Or like a Greek add sais : "The average Greek has ...one and a half kids.."

lol

yeah, the majority has 2 kids.
we are 2 kids in my family, but in my dad's they were 3 (all sons), and in my mothers' 7 but 2 of them didn't make it.

Stephanieronnie
in the past the used to have 3-5 children but bow the young people only make 1-2

Snake Goddess
The average is 1 or 2. Greece has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. The birthrate is lower than the death rate.

I have noticed that a lot of Greek families that I know have an average of 3 children in their families. Like my family its my older brother, then me, then my little sister. My mom had 5 other siblings though. My Yiayia had 16 other siblings, and my other yiayia had 9 other siblings, then both my papou's had an average of 7-10 siblings.

Is that all there is?
I'd go with Endevide's answer like a current commercial in Greece says: 1 & 1/2 on average! She is also right that after having 3 children you are considered as polyteknos: multichild parent, and have some incentives but not much.

In general in the past, as I believe was the case all over the world, somehow lower class families had more children and higher class had less children.

ynksjean
anywhere from 3-5. They usually have big families.

I think an average Greek family has 7 children because the modern day Greek government imposes strict birth control.
