The answer depends entirely on what you define Europe to be, and what you consider to be a country (San Marino? And do you class Enlgand, Scotland, NI, and Wales as seperate countries or just one as the UK) . In its widest definition, geographically and in what consistutes a country, then there are about 60 countries in Europe. |

neda is right, but I would say "about" 50, as this continent changes a lot, eg end of USSR, reunification of Germany, breakup of Yugoslavia, division of Czechoslovakia, etc.
27 of them form the EU
All of the EU plus 20 others are in the Council of Europe, a couple are in neither the EU nor the CE.
Few would include the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man as "countries" (they are essentially British), or the nation of Kazakstan. It may be on the wiki map but it is simply so far east of the Urals, it is in Asia by any measure. |

That depends which "Europe" your talking about. The European Union has 27 members. The European Monetary Union (countries with the Euro) has 15.
