They speak at least one language, and many do not speak a second. Specially in England.

But on the other hand, many young people have learned English, and often one or two foreign languages more.
But as Uli said, often those languages have not been used after leaving school and might not really be spoken.

Most likely 1-3. I have a friend from the Ukraine who can speak English, Ukrainian, and when she lived there, she was learning French.

I wish the US was more keen on students learning different languages. My friend started learning French when she was in Elementary School...if she'd stayed there, she'd have known three languages by now.

I speak Estonian and English.
I'm studying Russian and French.
And I'm going to study German or Sweden too.
So Europeans speak about 2-4 languages .

Well I live in The Netherlands, and we learn (besides Dutch) how to speak English at least.
Mostly French and German too (but not always on a very high level)

But the French and Italians don't really speak English (I've been there), because French and Italian are important languages in Europe, I guess.

In Ireland we all learn English and Irish in school and the majority of people also pick a third language - usually French, German or Spanish.

Educated (completed high school or trade school) Europeans usually speak 2 languages...it depends upon the country...if the country borders on a major influence...France, for example, and Germany...you will get people that speak dialects of mixed languages near Luxembourg in Germany...where people speak German with a French accent, and a few French words mixed in.

Look into the language root tribes....Teuton, Gall, Saxon, Celt....there are reasons for them understanding each other in different languages because the root is the same in some of these systems. Sort of like when you hear someone from Ireland, Scotland, England or Australia...the Germans, Dutch, Danish and Swedish can do that too (in a way)...but just think about how difficult it is to understand a Scot speaking full pace with all of their local expressions...that's how it is.

Then if your from the balkans, then you speak all of those languages and add Macedonian, serbian bosnian and ALbanian.
