How many people in Turkey speak English?

I'm travelling across Turkey and wondered whether they'll be many English speakers (my Turkish is not very good!).
Additional Details
I'll be on a bicycle!

Someone told me that a lot more Turks speak German than English, I speak a bit of German.

I think you'll be fine, in rural areas it's not common to see some one who's able to talk english but in touristic areas you be ok cause people are used to tourist so you'll be able to communicate though their english may not be perfect, still enough to communicate. also in the cities you'll probably notice that most people know english at least just enough to communicate, but it will be a good idea to get a small dictionary with you
Hope that helps, have a great time in Turkey ( :

As long as you are in Touristic areas you should be fine, but once you are off the beaten path then chances are pretty slim to see English speaking people. Take a dictionary with you or borrow it from the library that is what I usually do when I travel to a country where I didn't know the language :)

Edit: Watch out for the traffic while you are biking, there are some bad drivers like everywhere in the world. Get a cat eye bar to your bike. A friend of mine did that in Turkey way back when and had no problem. Sure, German will be helpful too but I don't know if it is winning over English though.

SORRY, I FORGOT TO ADD FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE IF YOU INQUIRE HELP!

Very many Turkish people speak English, especially in the tourist areas. The friends I made in Turkey (all of them Turkish of course) could speak fluent English, although they did get confused if I used slang terms sometimes. One of them was so fluent, he knew slang words I hadn't even heard of though haha :P

Most Turkish people know some German and some English to interact with tourists, so you should be fine :)

Although, it wouldn't hurt to learn a few basic phrases in Turkish, the people will love you for it! :D

The American ambassador is a very good English speaker but the British ambassador studied in Oxford.

that's true, in touristic areas you won't experience any complexity.

if you do, then communicate with the body language :)

i am going to turkey aswell in july and dont speak the language either or german for that matter lol
but i was told by are travel agent that it is wise to learn the basics of the language becuse many turks will take advantage of knowing your a tourist and up the prices of things so its better to learn it and they'l think youve been there before. i got tapes from my local libary and learnt a good amount so far, the tapes are easy and free!!!
enjoy ur holiday and take plenty a sunscreen.

eda
actually the point is almost everybody can understand your problem but not all of them can explain what you should do.

Bored!
There English is very good, very good at charm. Better at understanding English women than lots of English men. They know how to get women to listen to them, because they are clever with what they say in English.

Not just that it's body language. They know exactly how to talk the talk & walk the walk!!!!

They learnt it at school, how to speak to tourists!!!
