How many sets of clothes should I take on a backpacking trip around Europe and Africa?

I would take five sets if you are planning on doing your own laundry. This means five shirts, five pairs of underwear, maybe two or three pairs of shorts and two pairs of pants and five pairs of socks. This will keep your backpack light for other things like your camera, a pair of flip flops, minimal toiletries, and other paperwork you might have with you.

Two--one to wear and one to wash. I'd bring extra socks.

I guess it depends how long you will be gone, however I don't think I'd hassle with any more than 5. It is a real inconvenience to be loaded down with "stuff" when you are trying to enjoy the scenery and get from one place to another.

People there don't really care, and you should have plenty of opportunities to wash whatever might get noticeably offensive.

Just be sure to leave enough room for your camera. Now that is a real must-do!

I've backpacked all over Europe and the Middle East and I generally take 3-4 outfits with me. Sometimes I buy yet another while on the road. You sweat alot in hot weather and it is sometimes hard to find a place to wash your stuff (a washing mashine, not just the sink). In hot weather I can rarely wear an outfit for more than 2 days. Yet I try to do laundry about once a week. So for me 3 outfits is minimum, but I never take more than 5.

Underwear and socks should last you for at least a week. String-tangas don't take up much space, but they can save a girl the trouble of absolutely needing to do laundry today if you take 1 or 2 more than you really need.

If you are still looking for a backpack, go for one that is around 40 l in volume. It will prevent you from overpacking. I like the Deuter ACT lite series - I have the 35 +10 SL.

1. I like the cheekiness of the answer 'two' outfits, as less is best.

2. You need think in terms of layers and list your planned activities.

3. Be prepared to buy cloths as you need them. Often, they are relatively inexpensive, plus they make perfect souvenirs.

4. There are a few wonderful articles on my blog that you will love, filled with all the details you need! See below:
