I know this is such a broad question, but I am a student from the US that is going to have to move to London very soon. How much, approx mentally, will I have to spend in flight tickets, apartment rent, immigration and other fees, for the 1st month? Please help!

Hi. I cant help you with flights etc, but as for rent, it really depends on where you want to live. London is divided into public transport zones, according to how far away from the centre it is. The centre is Zone 1 , then Z2, Z3 etc etc... Obviously if you want to live in Zone 1 in the centre, the rent is quite expensive, expect about 1400pounds a month. As you move further out, which are still lovely areas, the rent becomes alot cheaper. Some where like Clapham, i paid around 1200 a month but split with housemates.
The other factor you have to consider is the further you live away from the centre, the more expensive it is to travel into it.
For an example, i earnt about 650-700 pnds a week, and after rent (paid weekly) then bills, food, beer, entertainment and travel expenses, there wasnt a whole lot left! Mind you, im a drinker! lol... Obviously if you shop at cheaper supermarkets you can save money.
Here are some websites to give you an idea of where you might like to live and how much to expect to pay.
Good luck, london is an awesome place and you will love it!
www.gumtree.com (for rentals etc)
www.tfl.gov.uk (Check out the Tube map, it gives you a ROUGH idea of where each place is - obviously its not the real way london looks! )
Forgot to add, many rentals want a deposit (normally one month rent) and the first 2 weeks up front. All up, you will prob be looking at forking out for 6 weeks rent straight up!

youre looking at least 3000 pounds

You MUST have a student visa before you arrive so contact the nearest UK Embassy. This can take several weeks if your application is complicated. There is an on-line application available. Google will find it for you. You must have been accepted as a student at a college before your visa will be granted.

One way airline tickets tend to grab the attention of immigration officials and tend to be expensive. If possible get a return ticket dated to suit a return at the end of the school year. Depending on season expect to pay about $600, more in high season.

Accommodation in London is expensive. You may be able to get your own room in a shared student house but expect a minimum of $800 a month with 1 month's rent as deposit against breakages,

Public transport in London is expensive and slow, in your case I suggest a second hand bicycle.

Cost of food, depends on your taste but allow $20 per day if you live frugally.

London is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. The college you are signed up to may be able to help with accommodation.

Good luck

sell everything you have and before you go find a place to live, rent.

About 3000-4000$ for the first month to get you set up.

Figure 5-600$ rent with housemates
20-30$ perday for food but if you are a student, you may be able to do better at the student cafeteria.
Public transport is very easy , the subway is great get a monthly ticket

your 1 way ticket can cost less if you shot around but figure 5-700$

It really depends on when you are leaving and where from. But tickets will be rounded off to about 1,000 dollars. Ap. rents will be around 600 dollars a month depending on where you stay. Plus some other extra money for food, clothing, and student costs, which is rounded up to 500-1500 dollars, however much you want to bring, so I would say the total is...........2500 dollars. If i am wrong sorry, but I tried to find everyting I could!!
