How safe is it to travel to russia these days?

I am a female american student who will be travelling to both St. Petersburg and Volgograd next week,(sept 4th) to study abroad for the fall semester(3 months)

I signed up for the trip before all of these conflicts started breaking out and it has be a bit worried about overall safety over there. especially for an American... I have everything all set up for the trip it would be really difficult to back out now. I have been checking the travel warnings and there has been nothing mentioned about the destinations i am heading to.

I am just a bit worried could someone help me out here? thanks

Safer than walking in New York at night time.

The tension due to the present situation in Georgia won't affect you at all. Just use common sense precautions like you would in any city.
Have a good time and enjoy yourself.

You're safer in Russia than in Britain which is notoriously anti-American and has the distinction of being the crime capital of the west.

the cities your heading to have a high number of tourists every year, so i doubt anything bad will happen to u. of course use ur common sense just like you would in any other big city..
and about the conflict... most people in russia understand that this conflict is between the government and politics and has nothing to do with normal people so there s no reason for them to harm you

The most important thing is to contact the US Embassy in Russia, preferably in St. Petersburg and if there's also a US Consulate in Volgograd. Since these are the places that you'll be going and spent most of your time soon. Ask the US Embassy there whether it is safe for Americans to travel/study in Russia at the moment, while there's tension between the US Government and Russia's regarding the war at Republic Georgia. They will tell you all the info that you need to know.
Plus, when you do go to Russia, please always contact the US Embassy regarding the place that you'll be staying and studying. Always have their numbers, emails with you just in case something of the unfavorable happen. The US Embassy will inform you and help you while you're there.
Besides telling the US Embassy/Consulate, give info to your family and close friends also.
Frankly saying, I don't think it's really that dangerous to travel to Russia at this moment, just don't attract too much attention and the most important this just like traveling to other countries is to avoid walking on black alleys, walking alone after midnight etc. And of course, the main and most important thing is to keep safe of your passport, money (don't bring cash), mobile phone (make sure important numbers are already saved in side and also write those numbers in your diary just in case if your mobile phone got lost or something.

Sorry, my answer seem kinda paranoid, but it's better to be safe than be sorry.

Absolutely safety.Don`t listen CNN propaganda

Well the cities you are traveling arent near the fighting. However, I wouldn't go anywhere alone. Watch out for gypsies, they'll take everything you've got.

If u are not Gerogian and if u are not Caucasian kida gay it shld be safe.

but if u are Georgian i have heard 45 Georgians has been disappeared there and they are followed by the police, by the population and even skinheads - a bunch of boys and girls who are killing some race of ppl

Moscow should be OK now, Russia is still opening up and lots of tourist are heading there. Only that Russian is slow its selling Russia as tourist destination.
