Cretans (being one myself) are known for their hospitality for many ages... We are really proud about it. We are not only kind to strangers but also we help each other..
But we also have pride.. So anless you do something to offend us, you will be fine..
Know, that if someone isn't nice to you, it's not because of where he is from. Every country has good and bad people. The thing is that our majority is nice and anyone will be very pleased to help you and communicate with you...
About your being American: it's true we don't like the American goverment.. Not Americans in general... We just don't like seing other countries being destroyed and people dying that's all. We get really angry when things like that happen..
You don't have to hide your identity.. You can say you are American. It won't make any difference to us. As long as you like wine ( :P ) and like to have fun you are the best company ever to a cretan!

gina
That is an absolute lie.

It depends more on you as an individual than on where you are from. If you come across as a snob or difficult, you will be treated accordingly. But if you are courteous and respectful you will be treated to a rewarding stay.

I don't think its true. The people in Crete are really lovely. If they don't like anyone its the Turkish and the Germans. They will also appreciate it if you make an effort with the language. Buy a phrase book and learn Hello Goodbye how to order a coffee etc. Oh and while you're there go to the biggest fresh water lake in Greece. Its beautiful. Have a great time!

All they need to know about you is you're leaving your money in their country.

Americans can be really obnoxious when they travel. Sometimes I just tell people I am Canadian to avoid getting into the whole "americans are rude" thing.

♥♥♥♥♥
Who likes the Americans anywhere??hehe

Just be yourself.

People in other Countries don't like Americans because of the US Government policies, but they are OK with people/tourists (as long as they are not snobs).

Remember people is people anywhere you go, so nothing makes one or the other "better".

Is always good to check with the locals about security and places to avoid.

Big
army brat here.Greeks are pretty friendly people.I've never had someone tell me they didn't like me because I was american. Some greeks who live near the souda bay nato station don't like the fact that some Americans who visit there get drunk and roudy, just like some small towns in America, when it happens there.
Also Greek men treat women great, don't worry.
Flirt with all the old men, give them a thrill,be ready to drink lots of coffee-LOL Have fun-enjoy life!

I see your screen name is airforce chick and i'm actually stationed in Germany for the army so as for living in another country already i can tell you this... You will see both sides. I hear in Greece they're nicer but here they sometimes make faces at us, call us stupid as were passing by but then again i've met some that were nice enough to reply when i asked a question. They like to ignore you! So if your not a *&^%^ then you'll do good. I'm having a blast!

As a pure Greek I would like to inform you and anyone else considering a visit to our beautiful country, that although we are a very small country and not extremely rich, we are wealthy in heart and hospitality, culture and history. Independence is a primal need of my people, which means that modern day politics being what they are today - there is an air of discontent towards the US government for trying to 'impose' its will upon us. However, we never forget, even for those in uniform, you are human beings and its not individuals we have 'issues' with but governments.

I, like most of my countrymen I believe, would welcome you and any one else who would honor us with a visit to Greece.

As far as the comment of the responder who said that we welcome anyone so long as you leave us your buck-My answer is that you cannot pay us enough to bear people like you my friend - keep your buck and stay away please!!!

Regards,
A Greek
