I'm going to Europe! Help me plot a course!? |
I'm going to Europe for two weeks in august. Where should I go? I don't want to stay anywhere for more than 3-4 days. Let's say I flew into Madrid for day 1 and out of Amsterdam for day 12, where should I go in between?
I should add I'm above all age requirements (drinking, smoking, etc) and plan to ride rail for city to city. |

You ask for some "must see spots" which in Switzerland would be the cities of Thun and Bern.
Hope you'll have a great vacation! |

You need more than 2 weeks, if you want to make it a good not chaotic trip. |

You should absolutely hit Italy. Venice, and Rome are amazing cities. Also visit London. Where else can you do a pub crawl and see the Queen! |

Seeing as you are going by rail - the journey are going to take up quite a long time
so umm what i would suggest is maybe...
spain-france-Italy-(through austria)-germany-netherlands.
or alternitavely..
spain-france-belgium-germany-netherlan...
look at it on a map.. see what you think.. i don't know what the good cities are or anything.. and whether you actually see the countries could depend on the time scale.. or how much money you have..
i think at least 4 days of that will be travel...
you know it might actually be cheaper + quicker to fly...... maybe i dont know.. but then it wouldnt be the same would it.. anyway is up to you...
best thing to do is just get a map.. look up the different countries and cities and see what appeals to you.. i can't help you with that...
Shame you don't have longer....... |

Definately see Eastern Europe.
Maybe Berlin, over to Krakow down to Prague to Salzburg in Austria, See Lucern in Switzerland, go down to Italy, up through France, then out of Amsterdam. BUT somehow you have to include London!!! |

good choices.
fly into the cheapest place (use kayak.com to find a cheap flight with multiple destinations). Spend a few days in madrid seeing the prado and eating great food. take on overnight train or a cheap flight to barcelona on www.whichbudget.com
then take a train through southern france and up to the alps (switzerland) hit gimmelwald if you can then head to paris by speed train and spend about 4 days there.
then go to brussels (if time, hit Brugges, Belgium as a side trip)and on to amsterdam. stay for a few days and fly home
get a rick steeves' guide from the library to help plan your trip or if you're on a budget, get a youth hostel membership and buy the Let's Go guides for the places you are visiting.
Bon Voyage! |

Go off the beaten track and visit some of the cities in Eastern Europe such as Prague, Krakow, and Budapest; it's cheaper and more rugged the further east you go. |

This itinerary includes transportation time between cities and maximizes the number of cities.
Day1-3 USA - Madrid (early a.m. arrival)
Day 2-3 Madrid
Day 3-5 Barcelona
Day 5-7 Milan
Day 7-10 Paris
Day 10-11 Amsterdam
Day 12 Amsterdam - US (late morning or early afternoon flight)
If you have the ability to change the routing, I'd recommend flying into Paris or Munich (less expensive to fly into than Madrid) for itinerary that includes:
Paris, Munich, Vienna, Venice and return from Venice
or
Munich, Vienna, Venice, Zurich, Munich (flying in & out of Munich may also reduce airfare)
or Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Cologne, Amsterdam
You'll probably have jet-lag when you arrive so plan 3 full days in your first city because you probably won't want to do a lot the first day or at least just spend the first day getting oriented.
Also, figure you'll spend day 12 packing or flying out, depending on when the flight leaves.
In the larger cities, I'd recommend the Hop-On Hop-Off Tours to maximize your time in each city and see all the important sites.
Find a good travel agent to help you book your flights, plan a good itinerary, purchase the best rail pass, book your hotels, and possibly some tours in or around the cities you plan on visiting.
Good Luck! |
