Yes my friend.
Welcome to Travel>Turkey category it has been so busy with everything other than Travel questions. We were mastering how to defeat enemies of secular republic, overcome anti-Turkish propaganda, overcome Islamic propaganda, Armenian propaganda, Cyprus and EU issues.
If you strip down all of those questions we usually see the questions like "Is it safe?", "what is the telephone number for that hotel?", "what should I wear to enter a mosque?". We, Turkish people see "Is it safe?" question very frequently in these days. I can understand your worries about hearing the name of Turkey everyday on the news. But it is nothing more than elections. Moreover presidental and parliament election will happen in the same year. 3 big demonstration took place which is for both protesting current government and defending secular state, where each of them was composed of more than 1 million of people. So such demonstrations should be on the news because Turkey is promoted as a 99 % Muslim country in the western world.
But there is nothing different in the streets. You may just see some flags of parties and cars with giant loud speakers for elections propaganda.
Our local people do not differ between nations, any foreigner in our country is a tourist and s/he is our very much respected guest. I can tell you that I met with tens of Israeli guys who had nice journey in Turkey without any problems. So you are welcome our country and have a nice trip.
To clarify the last point. Yes there is some negative feelings against about current US politics. Because we know that US playing double sided in Northern Iraq issues. But I assure you noone does not have any idea to demonstrate those negative feelings on tourists. |

I suppose it's safer than Downtown LA... |

 |
Is Moscow safe? What about London, New York city, Amsterdam, Chicago loop district, downtown L.A.......?
Even Teheran is safe if women cover their hair :))
For God's sake, where do you get the idea that a country is safe and another is not???
Let me be honest with you. Turkey is not safe, because there is always the risk of an earthquake, but what about the small scale earthquake in England that left hundreds of people homeless? It was measured as 4.5 on the Richter scale. We had two earthquakes here in Cyprus at 6.5 and nothing happened.
So, which place is safe, which is dangerous? Sit back, drink a glass of wine and decide for yourself. |

pf...I hate this question. I read bbc and stuff they depict as if we're in a civil war lol. Guys, Turkey is actually more safer than probably where you live right now. The crime rate is low. There is absolutely no other place I prefer to Turkey, including U.S. You'll see when you go, people are very friendly and helpful, and cheerful.
My advice is, make a proper research about a country you're going. I went to Romania last year and I tried to speak a few words in Romanian! I read articles, news about it. Although it is a very small country and most of the people don't even know where it is. I think you get my point. |

I assume you are American, no offence.
"anlarm" and "Zorb..." have given you the right information.
Please don´t take this personally, but Turks get a bit insulted after being asked if their country is "safe" for the thousandth time (or maybe the 53rd time?).
Imagine being asked regularly by foreigners, "Is it really safe to visit the USA? I keep hearing about school shootings and racial violence. And anyway, there is such a great threat of terror attacks, isn´t there? Besides, I´ve heard that everyone there can have a gun, so it´s no wonder there are so many murders and so much violence".
This would bother you too, for the same reasons.
I understand that you are just concerned and wanted to check things up, and this is an obvious place to do so. But if you really ARE American, DO REALISE that your govt. has a habit of putting official "Warnings" to US citizens about visiting certain countries at certain times, which are totally unwarranted. It just depends which mood their govt. is in at the moment, if they have had a tiff with that other country´s representatives etc.
DO do your own research (as you are) and DO stay open-minded. Don´t assume that all countries outside of Europe have some kind of crisis going on which means that life is dangerous. Go wherever YOU want to, just stay culturally sensitive and open.
I hope you will have a wonderful time in Turkey, and I´m sure you´ll not feel at all threatened!!
Iyi Gunler, Bye bye, take care!! |

My dear friend,
that depends on to which part of Turkey you are going to go to.
The most known cities of Turkey (Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Antalya, Mugla....) are safer than several locations which you would love to visit as a tourist (for instance, Malaysia, Egypt, Morocco, Thailand, Phillipines et cetera). On the other hand, I can neither say it is safer nor say it is more dangerous than big metropol cities in the world (New-York, London, Paris, Rome, Moscow and et cetera).
You just need to be aware, stay with the crowd, stay away from the dark backstreets, (you know, the classical metropol city rules). |
