Don't carry a gun- international problems could keep you detained.
The best way to prevent anything from happening is just to keep your money concealed. Don't let others see that you have money on you. Keep it in your sock, in the inside of a shirt, etc.
In an apartment, keep all money concealed and well hidden. Put it in a spot NO ONE could think of. Like put it in a egg carton in the fridge.
Also, don't wear any flashy items when walking around. Carry it in the same place you keep your money, and then wear it once you get to your destination. This will prevent any theft.
AND MAKE SURE YOU CONCEAL YOUR PASSPORT, GREENCARD, ETC. My brother had gone to Cambodia and had his greencard stolen.
BE CAREFUL.

i went to europe last summer and didn't experience any robbery, but i do advise you to take a money pouch that hides under your clothes, like under your shirt.
i was told not to carry too much cash, but i did.
be careful of gypsies because they WILL follow you and ask u to give them money. just dont' pay attention to them an they'll leave you alone, eventually.
just keep your money very close to you. your gonna LOVE europe! good luck!

hi. i was born in europe. in romania. but left when i was 6 and returned for a visit when i was 18 years old. my cousins said that we should dress like the locals or they will know we are tourist. also, dont keep your wallet in your back pocket or your side pockets. try to keep them hidden. like a pouch that you keep underneath your shirt that hangs over your shoulder. dont put your wallet in your shirt pocket that is on your chest. people have ways of bumping into you and stealing that way the easiest. i was told to act normal when in poblic. dont lay things down anywhere. you need to be carefull. even if europe is beatiful there are very many people who dont work and all they do is steal from people walking down the streets. hold your bags tight after you shop and lock your windows and doors whereever you stay. have lots of fun and be carefull.

You sound like you think you will be entering a gang war of some kind. You won't be as long as you stay along the beaten path. I lived in Spain and England for 4 years and always felt safe because I always "watched my back." I never let myself be in a spot where there were no other residents or visitors at the same time. I visited over 23 countries while I lived there and the only encounter I had was my wife got pinched by an Italian guy while crossing the street. I took that as a complement--but she didn't.

You'll be fine; don't be so worried, but try and stay out of un-safe situations. I'd suggest you take a ordinary bus trip, a cheap way to travel like the residents always do, and make note of all the places that seem worth going back to on your own later. Then do that--as long as the area of interest seems safe to you. Your odds of being hurt are a lot less than being hit by lightening in most cases. The reason you seem so concerned is because you have been watching CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, or the local TV channels so much that you are just over-worried. Just remember that the news channels are showing the worst things that can and do happen. You're not apt to encounter them any more in Europe than you are right here in the good ol' U.S.A. Go for it and enjoy!

Why do you think you will be robbed?
I think you will be safe if you try and blend in with the locals. That means, try not to look like an American, so, no baseball caps, no baggy pants and certainly dont wear a camera around your neck.
Oh, and dont speak too loud, europeans hate that.
Follow these simple rules and maybe you'll survive.

About a billion tourists circulate around Europe annually and much lees trouble happens to them while in Europe compared to staying locked at their homes! Why should anyone go for vacation if he/ she is threatened from the beginning?
Dear, come to Europe and enjoy it!
I have never been robbed in Europe, while several times it happened to me while in the USA! In Europe I feel as secure as in deserted islands! People are kind, good, helpful, civilized in Europe! Tourists create more troubles than the Europeans!
If anyone wants to come to Europe for vacation fine, we welcome all the people! If anyone wants to come invading our nests, we ask what would you do!

A money belt or this small wallet type thing that clips on your waistband and is worn in side your pants. Get travlers checks!!! And try not to look like a tourist! You know, the fannypack wearing, camera clicking, goofy looking kind, with the neon sign over them saying I am a tourist toting lots of cash ROB ME!!
Just be cautious!

Otherwise , all what you need to do is understand the culture before going and ask consierge where are the places that you need to avoid. and in addition , you need to ensure that you have means of communications to where you could contact the police

well most of those are probably illegal and would get you arrested at the airport. Check European laws online and see what you can and can't carry. Unless you're kidding cause then I'd say go with the pepper spray because after you spray them you can beat the hell out of them and feel really powerful and manly.

I live in Canada right now but my background is Czech.I was there 2 weeks ago.You won't get robbed if you won't be showing cash or credit cards or your passport etc.in public too much,don't go to crowdy places,that's where the pocket thieves "hunt",don't pay with big bills in eastern Europe,show just "pocket change".If you go to Prague,try not to use taxi cabs,they overcharge everybody no matter where you come from.
