I'm traveling to England (London and Sheffield) and France (Paris)... What should I wear?? |
I'm from Minneapolis, Minnesota (USA) and I'm visiting friends in England and France... and am a little nervous I'll stick out like a sore thumb because of what I'm wearing. What should I pack for the clubs, going out to eat, and just walking around and shopping on the streets?
Thanks so much for any advice! Any other tips you may have for me about my trip are welcomed as well, I'm not the loud, brash, stereotypical American and do not want to appear as such. I cannot wait to be a guest in your fine country and maybe change how some people view Americans :) Additional Details I'm traveling in May. |

Laura - relax! In England, people will be more observant at your accent, rather than what you wear (you will be wearing clothes, yes...?) Just act yourself. Sheffield's not too bad - fine nightlife, tha knows - and London...well if you end up in the usual touristy places of London, then you'll be seen as stereotypical. |

you'll be safe in jeans for all of the above. Have a great trip |

something warm! no baseball caps, white socks, trainers (sneakers) or lumberjack shirts. jeans are good with nice t-shirts. look at some UK clothing shops for ideas. no abercrombie, no chinos and no ken and barbie style hair. |

jeans are always good for most occasions (unless very formal) you could put nice top with them for meals or jumpers etc for shopping and you'll need a coat. You can wear jeans in most clubs now or you can dress up to the nines! most things go in a regular nightclub. |

A pair of jeans. A couple of tops. Comfy shoes for travel. Extra undies. My favorite advice is to pack light and shop when you get there. |

Just make sure you are wrapped up well, because its cold and wet here. You haven't given your age, so its hard to help, but from what I've seen on USA TV shows, its all pretty much the same. Jeans are your best bet, and a warm jumper. Have fun!!! |

If you are taking jeans, take the nicer ones, not the ones you got for 5 USD at Walmart. Leave some space and some money to shop for clothes in Paris and London, don't make the mistake of buying clothes at home for your trip. I can often tell US-American girls apart by the t-shirts and tops they are wearing. It is a certain cut/style that is very telling about where you are from, even if the clothes are made in India or China. White tennis shoes are an absolute no-no, if it has got to be sneakers take some other color (brown, black, beige, blue,...). Same goes for sweat pants or similar bottoms (urrrgh). Go for casual-elegant rather than athletic.
If you are from Minnesota you'll be used to the cold, you won't need warm clothes in May. What you'll need is a decent wind- and rain-proof jacket. Your shoes should be waterproof too. It is a good idea to take blouses and t-shirts with long sleeves and mix and match them with short-sleeved t-shirts and maybe a sweatshirt. It is impossible to tell what the weather is going to be like in May, it can be warm and sunny (miniskirt, sandals and strappy top) as well as cool and rainy (jeans, sweatshirt, wellington boots or gore-tex hiking shoes and rain jacket).
BTW, you might want to check out the CultureShock! guidebooks before you go. I've found some of them to be really good at explaining certain things in a foreign country, but the quality varies a lot depending upon the author. |
