I am considering to travel a bit and use hostels instead of hotels. Now I am 35, is that a problem?

Hostels are usually aimed at young people. Because of that they are often very cheap, they speak english and have internet access, so I like that. But will they refuse me because I am too old?

in order to go to a youth hostel you have to be under 26 in some places. for example, Germany's Bavaria region has a strictly enforced rule of 26 and under. you just need to make sure where you are going accomodates people of your age before you get there.

It depends on where you are going. I think it's open to all ages in most countries.

If you are 25 and under, the YHA (youth hostel association) will issue you a card for a small fee, and that will entitle you to discounted rates. But they will accept anyone if they have space. I was 22 when i stayed in hostels throughout europe and there were plenty of people in their thirties traveling through them as well.
Even over 25, the rates are still much lower than most hotels, and hostels have a much more communial environment where you can exchange stories and recomendations with other travelers.
But be warned that privacy can be a hard thing to come by in some hostels, and some of the beds are pretty substandard and beaten down. Always bring your own sheets/ blanket or sleeping bag

Hostels are for any age and you 'll save a lot more than staying in a hotel !

If the real reason you want to travel a bit as you say is to see the world and enjoy what you have been neglecting I'd say stay at the YWCA! They are inexpensive and usually closer to interesting parts of down town. If you're trying to see New York on a dime, it's not going to happen. I don't think age has anything to do with staying at Hostels. We are empty nest-er now and have traveled more since we became such than we did the first 32 years while we were bringing up our children. We don't stay at the Hilton or Galleria or those expensive places. We use economical Motel 6, Budget Inn, etc. Besides the best bet we often get is from high end motels. They have real low rates when their occupancy is lacking. Pick your trips carefully and don't make reservations. Show up around 5 or 6 PM and ask "got any rooms left? I need one for tonight only. Just need to sleep before heading out." That line has gotten me Marriott Suites very often at $59 versus the normal $99 to $119 per night. Otherwise join a hotel's frequent rewards program. They offer special rates for members and you don't have to put up with teens running up and down the hall yelling at 3 am.

Thee are many Hostels and Home Stays available. Also look for Pensions. These are a step up from your typical Hostel but still cheaper than Hotels. They are clean and Safe (at least the ones I have seen and stayed at.)

not YHA's. went to them as a younster with my family. they have no age limit. they are better than backpackers.

t_maia2000
No, your age is not a problem. As somebody already said, only in Bavaria in the official IYHA/HI hostels will they refuse you. I've met plenty of people in their 50's and 60's staying at hostels. "Youth" hostel is misleading, the main reason mostly young people stay at hostels is bc students and the like do not have a lot of money and cannot afford the hotels older business traveller's frequent.

If you are still worried, avoid the official IYHA/HI hostels. Backpacker's or independent hostels have less strict rules and are more accomodating.

Not all hostels are youth hostels, so pick one that is not strict on the age.

Check out hostels.com. I have booked here several times and I'm 37.
