I am planning a visit to Greece. Which Island should I be sure to visit?

?
All Greek islands are beautiful. However, this choice depends on what exactly you want from these holidays. Wild night life? Romantic atmosphere? Classical Greek island?
I would recommend Mykonos, Santorini and Crete or Rhodes, respectively.

Mykonos:

Santorini:

Crete:

Rhodes:

Hope all this is useful! :D Good luck and have a lovely holidays!

Well depending on your lifestyle and expectations...

Why not Paros lots of nice sandy beaches, not to expensive, lots of nightclubs and beachbars, yet more relaxing sites and villages... If you get bored, you can always take the ferry to Mykonos and Naxos that are pretty close.

I would suggest in any case small islands like those in the Cyclades complex if you are planning to stay for 3-4 days on the island, and bigger ones like Rhodes, Corfu, Kefallonia if you are staying for a week, and Crete if you are staying for 1 week to 10 days.

If you are planning your vacation for August, just keep in mind that you will not find tickets for the more popular islands either by airplane or ferry, and you will have a hard time with accomodation...

All depends the time you can spend.. and how you like your holidays to be.
You like beaches, nature, sea, museums or just the day by day contact with Greek locals.. ?
I have not seen half of it, and I hope to live long enough to see it all, but if you want a good combination of the above, I can advice Crete or the Peloponnese..
Crete being the largest Island and Peloponnese because of the Corinth canal sort of Island... but absolutely lovable.
Enjoy your stay.. and you will go back..

I just got back from a trip to Mykonos! It was absolutely amazing and I'm definitely going back. The beaches are beautiful and the food is DELICIOUS. Night life is huge there. I stayed at this hotel: http://www.manoulashotel.gr and took this tour to Delos http://www.aegean-ventures.com . HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Feel free to email me at moniviolin@gmail.com if you have more questions!

There are 2 options....

As a travel agency I would say Crete, Chania...

There are really beautiful beaches- and really clean, the waters are blue and green-, the food is great and the people are lovely, we speak for the aythentic, traditional, greek hospitality...

But as Christine I would say Milos, my favorite island

It has all the above, plus the Beautiful sunset, the caves and that usually the tourists are younger in ages between 18-35
The view that this island has, have never seen it before...And it is a really bit cheaper than Crete...

But both islands are beautiful...Pick and choose
If you need any help you can contact, maybe I could help you!

Try these sites to look out

And look out for hotels

Hi :) why not try Symi island in the Dodecanese? It is an island you fall in love with the moment you look out of the windows from the ferry. You can fly into Rhodes and then take a ferry (45mins-1hr depending on weather) to Symi. Symi is large enough to have all that you want, boussouki club, night club, dancing bar, cocktail bars. But small enough that you can relax and not be heckled and attacked by hundreds of people trying to get you into their businesses. We have beautiful beaches (the best are accessible by the taxi boats) and tour boats that take you around the island with BBQs.
There is also a festival with live events and music throughout the summer!
Many famous people have visited here, Richard Gere, Tom Hanks, and Madonna!

Check it out at www.symivisitor.com and many other websites if you google! :)

also, if it isnt your scene... Rhodes is very close with everything and anything you could possibly want.

Here are a few reasons to choose Milos:

* Spectacular geological formations, unique in all of Greece. See the album "Milos Rocks" in http://www.virtualtourist.gr . Milos boasts one of the most remarkable coastlines in the world.

* Romantic sunsets: If nothing else, you absolutely *must* experience a Milos sunset from "Kastro", a rather steep hill adjacent to the village of Plaka, where residents used to find refuge from the pirates 600-200 years ago.

* Museums: You can spend a great deal of time in Milos just visiting museums if you wish. Go to any or all of the following: Ecclesiastical, Mining, Archaeological, Folklore, as well as periodic/seasonal exhibits, such as the Photographic Panorama of Milian History, the WWII exhibit, etc.

* Sightseeing: In addition to romantic sunsets, you'd want to visit the catacombs of Milos, older than the ones of Rome, and the most important early Christian site of worship in all of Greece; the discovery site of the famous Venus de Milo, and a life-size replica of the statue along with hundreds of other findings in the Milos Archaeological museum; the ancient, Greco-Roman marble theater; the windswept, luminous white rocks of Sarakiniko; the cave of Papafrangas; the ruins of the ancient city of Fylakopi, where naval shipping originated as a human activity some 11,000 years ago; the imposing rocks in the old pirates' hideout in the cove of Kleftiko; the 90,000 year old volcano crater and active hot springs in Kalamos; the quaint fishing village of Klima with its unique "syrmata" houses on the water.

* Kayaking: Rod Feldtmann, an Australian, offers fantastic kayaking trips around parts of the island. Don't miss it for the world if you like paddling. http://www.seakayakgreece.com

* Diving: Visit the Milos Diving Center in Pollonia, and sign up for a few hours of scuba diving. It's a lot of fun!

* Swimming: Milos has an astonishing diversity and multitude of beaches! Long, narrow, remote, popular or accessible only by boat, pebble or sand, there are more than 70 beaches with crystal-clear waters to enjoy everywhere around the island.

* Bicycling: My personal favorite! I go anywhere in Milos by bicycle. Rent a bicycle and explore!

* Driving around on a moped: If you have a license to operate a scooter/moped, give this a try. It will take you anywhere a bicycle can, but without the fun (and effort) of a bicycle. You may also rent a passenger car, an ATV or an SUV if you'd like.

* Trekking/hiking: Milos begs to be explored on foot! If you are in good shape, by all means, get on the road!

* The round of Milos: There are a couple of boats that make the round of Milos in one day with a stop for lunch in nearby Kimolos. A must see, recommended for all visitors.

* Sailing: Similar to the "round" above. Sailboats generally only go as far as Kleftiko, but you get a fuller experience, as you visit caves with a dinghy tender and munch on seafood cooked on the spot by the captain on the beach.

* Go on a shopping spree. A fool and her money are soon parted, lol! Seriously, not very many tourist traps in Milos, but most shops are quite interesting to visit. Tourist shops are located primarily in Adamas and Plaka.

* Dining out: Milos offers incredible food! Dine in some of the best restaurants of the island (the ones displaying the prestigious "Milos is for Lovers RECOMMENDED sign) such as Alevromylos, O Hamos, Tarantella, Araxovoli, Filetaki, Floisvos, etc., and do not forget to visit the 2-3 traditional-flavors shops for local products you can sample, send as a gift, or even take home with you. A lot of visitors are drawn to the "infamous" Milos chocolate pie, but my favorite is August (thyme) honey - Milos makes the best in the world!

... and many, many more!

- Andreas
