not sure where it is you are comming from, i would assume the US since there are many us soldiers living down south. i am dutch, and i love it here, yes we have our negative things, but so does every other country, we dutch are very open minded, specailly in the metro city's. down south they tend to be to them selves, i used to date a soldier living there and spend muchtime there, they are very friendly nothing wrong with them, but to themsleves,private people.
i would recommend you would come and visit for about 3 months, not during the tourist season but the down season, cause if you like it than, you will love it in spring and summer.

Holland is great and so are its people. Its the only place in europe where a gang of teenage boys will come up to you because you are english and they want to practice their language skills on you instead of mugging you.
Its a very modern country on the whole......courtesy of a makeover by the Luftwaffe 65 years ago and i have found the standard of living there to be very high and much better than the Uk. Maastricht is beautiful and i'm sure you will be very happy there.

I would highly reccomend Holland as a country to live in. Myself i am planning to go and live there.
I lived 3 months in The Hague and i found it very nice, peaceful and quiet. I managed to travel through the whole country and i saw many places.
Amsterdam is quite busy and has a high developped night life. Rotterdam is a nice place. Also, Maastricht.

Learning Dutch can be a bit difficult, but most people speak English there. There are some similarities with English as well; in my oppinion Dutch is a mixture of german with english

I will go again to Holland in 2 weeks, and i will spend my whole summer there!

Well, what David said is quite right. I live in the south of Holland(Brabant, Breda)and I think the landscape is beautiful but the people are weird. In general they don't like foreigners, or other countries. Their hard to open up towards other cultures. Dutch is a very difficult language, but when you go, indeed try to speak Duth everywhere, even if other people can speak English with you.

Great place to live, I lived in Germany, 1 Km from the Dutch boarder. My closest town in Holland was Roermond, a beautiful little town with a fantastic laid back feel. The Dutch speak English, to a man, the UK/USA TV shows are sub-titled (NOT dubbed) and so I used to watch Dutch TV.
The downsides, their driving.....I had so many near misses, a friend of mine was wiped out because a Dutchman changed his mind (he was turning left) and turned back onto the road and straight into my friend. The housing costs. If you are familiar with the UK housing market, the dutch is much the same.
In fact I noticed a lot of parallels with the UK and always felt comfortable in Holland.

I live here for the past 6 years. I think Dutch are very arrogant and regard their country as really modern and efficient. The truth is that the Netherlands is a deeply traditional nation with a hidden nationalism in it. It is a modern nation in many aspects (all speak English) but not as efficient as the Dutch would think. In short: lazy, unmotivated people that live, dress and talk like peasants for the most of the time. No culture. Life is easy but very flat. No excitement, no joy. My best place is the Schiphol airport where I can just escape...Next year I am out of here. I had enough...

I have known The Netherlands for about 30 years. I used to know it as a very positive, friendly, and liberal place. Very clean, somewhat cramped, beautiful buildings, a tad expensive. Things are different now. The Dutch have always been arrogant, but now the country has swung very much to the right, and thoroughly unpleasant and uncharitable behaviour is becoming more common. There is also a strong Protestant/Catholic/atheist divide. The Protestants tend to eat very simply - cheese and sliced meats, bread, apples and oranges, and packet soup. The Catholics eat and live much more sumptuously. The atheists are (inevitably) a law unto themselves. But I think you should try it out. I would have done when I was younger. Dutch is, incidentally, not an easy language to learn, not so much because it is difficult (actually, it isn't), but because the Dutch will always reply in English, thus depriving you of the ability to learn it.
