Two reasonable and really great hotels are:
1.The Avenue ,Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 33
2. The Golden Tulip (the one on Nassuakade is cheaper, but just as nice)
Though these are in quite different places they are both in fab locations and are great hotels, you wont find anything wrong and they are good value.
In terms of things to do, apart from the usual wandering about, dont miss a trip on the river, probaly early evening is nicest for this. For art the Reiks museum is great, and the Anne Frank house is heavy, but really worth doing.
Drink some beer and try the cheese.
Have a great time! |

The America hotel is really nice (stayed there twice) and it's right in the centre of a busy area, so lots of shops, bars and restaurants.
It all depends what kind of things you want to do....but you won't have to go far to be entertained in Amsterdam....there's something for everyone!
Have a great time :O) |

Depends what you are going for? If it is as weekend on the beer, a visit to the Red light district, go to a 'coffee house' etc then things to do are in great supply.
if you are gonna play the tourist then there is Anne Franks house, the Museum of sex, to name but a few.
The only thing I will say is if you are going for a 'boozy' weekend then keep hold of your wallet in the Red Light area and don't flash your money around. Amsterdam may have a tolerance level with regards to the sex and drugs trade but there are still some parts that do require a bit of 'keeping a watchful eye' on each other.
Havea great time, it's one cool city. |

As well as the above, I'd also recommend the Stedlrijks museum, if you like modern art.
If you like more classical sort of art, eg Rembrandt, then go to the Rijksmuseum, but I found it a bit staid.
Apart from that, just wander around... one time I went with a friend, and just wandered through Vondelpark on a summer's day... lots of interesting things to see, including some dutch folk who were exceptionally good at hackysack, and some weirdly dressed stilt walkers! |

I always stay around the Rembrandtsplein, plenty of nice bars, restaurants and coffee shops there, visit the cannabis and sex museum for a giggle but both are interesting too! Van gogh museum is good, but its the sort of place you can have a wonder and enjoy yourself, and of course theres the red light district and have a smoke, relax and enjoy!! |
