Ohh... the days.... I went back packing in Australia five years ago! Fiji, new zealand, anywhere around there. You'll have a blast! The economies there unlike in Europe or North America, are geared up towards tourism! They have so many amenities! I travelled from South Australia, up the East Coast in a matter of two months. 3 or four days per stop (avg)
The bus ticket allowed 20 stops (min) and only cost around $350 AU$. Hostels were around $20 a night for shared room.
$35 for single bed private! Meals were cheap... no taxes and no tips necessary. Plus Hostels allowed you to cook in their kitchens. Meeting people... etc and site seeing by yoruself or with new friends is amazing too. (i am dreaming of doing it again this summer!) Maybe i might do THailand Laos, Cambodia, Veitnam first then head to INdonesia then to Australia. South Asia is cheaper than Australia. $1000 US (i have been told by other back packers) would be sufficient enough to travel in S.E Asia. Australia cost me $5000 for two months, including air fare $2300). You can work in australia too. what else?try this website... to talk chat see photos of fellow back packers. wayn.com My profile is there too.

you def. want to look into the hostels. Try http://www.hostels.com/en/index.html
I would go around Europe. That way you get to see more countries than just one! This is an exciting time in your life! Take some survival classes, to help you while you're hiking. Read up on the specific landmarks in Europe so that you don't miss anything! Take a good waterproof camera, preferably a digital one so that you don't have to worry about film. Get extra batteries, and a memory card for it. You'll need some money for your hostels as most aren't free anymore. Of course you'll have to eat, so bring plenty of money for sampling all the different cuisines. Don't bring cash or credit cards, bring traveler's checks. If they're lost or stolen, they'll be insured so you can replace them. Bring some military MRE's for while you're hiking. Bring along a couple of nice outfits to change into for the nicer places. Bring a journal for you to write your thoughts and things you see and feel and think so you don't ever forget them. Take a couple of emergency blankets just in case, and some waterproof matches for starting campfires, even in the rain. Bring an international calling card so you can call your friends and family from over there, because I'm sure they'll want to hear from you. Learn a few key phrases in each language of where you'll be visiting. Most importantly, "Do/Can you speak English?" "Where's the bathroom?" and "How much do I owe you?" Most of all bring an open mind and remember that you are a visitor in their country, and be respectful of different customs that might be very different than what you are used to. |

First of all, go for it!
Second of all I would highly rec commend Europe. I have not been to Fiji but I have seen a lot in Europe for, besides (airplane, train fees) have spent little money. Integrating England into your trip is fine, flights from England to Europe (main) are fairly priced.
My top picks (by the way all have youth hostels throughout that I will mention to go to). Italy (Rome, Florence, Island of Capri) for South. I did not enjoy Venice that much, it costs a lot to get out there from Italy, and did not think it was worth it. Check out the Southern Coastal resortish areas In Italy, for low money besides train fare around Italy. Also use the Euro rail to stay in Amsterdam! I cannot say enough good things about my visit there. Good luck and have fun, and make it happen! |

Hi
Im not sure what Ashley is going on about, as it would seem they have never done it.
you havent given us much information as to how long you have to travel.
Flights to Australia from the US will cost around $1600 and thats just a return ticket.
I backpacked for 6 months in 2005 BY MYSELF and had a budget of $15,000AUD. This only included my spending money to pay for accomodations, and food and sightseeing etc. My tickets cost me another $3000.
There are hostels in Fiji, but really not that much to do there in the scheme of things besides sitting on the beach.
IF you would like some further help Im more than happy for you to email me any other details you have of what you want to do. |

I suggest Europe. I also suggest going on Amazon and typing in keywords like backpacking & europe and finding a book that will provide great tips and advice on the best accomodations. There will also be valuable information like how much money you'll need to take with you and must-see attractions.
Have fun! |

if you want someplace sort of differant, try scandinavia. its a very safe place to travel, the crime rate is low. fiji might be quite costly, even just getting there is going to cost you a pretty penny considering how far it is. personally, id go with europe, there are hostels everywhere, and they have a system set up for young travelers like yourself (germany especially). the most important advice i can possibly give you though, DONT GO ALONE! it is always better to travel with at least one other person just in case. you may think you know someone or a particular area, but that all could change in an instant. so bring a friend. |
