Depends on (1) what type of scenery you like, and (2) what type of architecture you like.

I like (1) Norway for scenery, and (2) Amsterdam for architecture.

I would be very interested to see that new, 5th UK country that the first answer refers to.

If you're looking for both architecture and scenery, I'd say:

Italy - architecure > scenery
France - architecure = scenery
Germany - architecure < scenery

Jules
1) UK (all 5 countries ... provided you don't go broke!)

2) Czech Republic in particular Prague

3) Hungary

4) Italy in particular Rome and region of Tuscany

5) Germany: Munich and region of Bavaria

I agree with the Czech Republic.

The architecture is phenomenal, especially in Prague, Kutna Hora, and Cesky Krumlov. The scenery (especially when traveling from Prague to KH or CK is beautiful as well). Also, it's a fairly inexpensive country; Euros aren't used--Czech Crowns are.

The architecture is mainly Gothic/medieval and 18th century. Pretty much all of the buildings are stone or stucco, but everything is painted in bright colors or has frescos. The scenery has rolling green hills and villages---but not as many forests as say, New England. That's probably why the houses were made of stucco (lack of wood). Since the Vlatava (Moldau) River runs through the country, you can see it in many major cities.

All of the European countries are really worth a visit, but to answer your 1. question I suggest all the Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and of course Iceland (a country that is always forgotten, because it´s so far away).

Regarding your 2. question I recommend: (sorry they are not in any alphabetical order, just cities that came to my mind)

Prague, Cheque Republic
Budapest, Hungary
Madrid, Barcelona, Spain
St.Petersburg, Russia
Athens, Greece
Munich, Berlin, Germany
Rome, Italy

Well the list could go on and on because there is just so much to see in every country. Enjoy your visit whatever you choose and have a nice summer.
