Crete is a part of Greece which in term is a part of EU. Same goes for all the GREEK islands. You only need a valid passport only when entering Greece. You can move around Greece without ever being required to show your passport. So your expiry date on the passport is not an issue.
This can only cause you problems if you get out of Greece after the passport expires. |

As mentioned above yes Crete is a part of Greece ans so it's part of the EU, as for traveling there with only 5 months left on your passport. Well that can be another issue. This what I've found and the below links should be helpful to you.
http://www.justindocument.com/visa_files/Visa_Greece.htm
Please note this visa requirements are for US citizens only. If you are not a US citizen or a resident alien please contact our office at (914) 592-2760.
US passport must be signed, valid for at least 3 months and with at least 2-3 blank visa pages not amendment pages in passport. If your passport does not meet the requirements, we can assist with obtaining new passport, passport renewal or additional pages for a valid US passport

BTW Learn a few Greek words before you go, it's nice to see people's reaction when you do. Like (Phonetically spelled) Efhareesto (Thank You) and Kalimera (Good Morning) Many Greeks in touristy spots speak English so you'll have no problem getting around. |

Yes. Crete, as part of Greece, is a part of the European Union. The same applies for all Greek islands or any other part of Greek territory. If there is an exception, that could be Mount Athos -or Holy Mount- to the extent that, as a Monastically administered territory, Mount Athos enjoys a special status both within Greece and the EU, consequently. As testament to that special status can be the fact that because of the exclusively male monastic nature of Mt Athos, women are barred from either living or even entering/visiting this territory. |
