I can't speak for all parts of Greece. However, the countryside and/or islands should be fine. It can be pricey traveling between the islands, so go only when you're able to splurge. :)

To get around, I would use the ferries for transportation between islands. It takes a bit longer, but it's cheaper than flying or using speed boats(Catamarans). You also get to enjoy the scenery and take pictures.

The best time to visit, in my opinion, is May. You avoid the tourist season, and the weather is perfect. So if you're going this month, great timing. From Monastiraki station, not far from Downtown Athens, you can purchase a travel pass(equal to $60 U.S. Dollars) that will allow you to visit different islands for one price.

Hope you have a great vacation. Kiki

meeting the culture that has inspired the whole world is definitely not a bad idea...go!

The Stainless Steel Rat
The Greek have been around too long to dislike foreigners. They might not approve what the USA is doing but they do not confuse the issues. you will be welcomed and you will have a great time. Anyway the majority agrees for you to go.

Can you take me with you? I miss Greece!

GO!!! It's incredible.

I have been to Cos and Kalymnos, and it´s really worth travelling.

I would suggest the island of Cos. Cos-City is a very green town, lots of parks. On almost every street corner, there is an archeological excavation from the ancient Greeks. There are also many buildings from the Turks and the Italian. Not far away from Cos-Town (about 3 kilometres) you find the "Asklipeion" (also from the ancient Greeks, very famous). In the West of the island, you´ll find nice villages, small churches, beaches to relax.
Touristical places are Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari on the North coast.
If you want further information, see:

From Kos, you can make a trip to the island of Kalymnos (which is famous as the island of spongedivers - don´t forget to buy a sponge when you are there), you can also go climbing there, it´s not an overcrowded place.
