I heard that Greeks had good connection with Slavs (Serbians,etc) But aren't they culturally closer to Latinos?

hello momo my friend...i like to answer that by saying..that...apart from the relegious conitations,,the slavs dont have much in common ,with greeks i have dealt with slavs and tried in vain to become a friend and come close to them,but they treat you always suspiciouslly,and worse of all they talk alot behign ur back even atthe same table as your talking ,plus thier values are not excatly the same as greeks..the only 2 things they have in common with us is relegion and patriotisim. as per for thier own country...how ever i have worked with and had many spanish friends,from south america and even spain and even costa ricans...what is nice about the spanish is that, they have a sense of high civility with in societys ladder..respect comes at the actions a man can prove ,not just words and false promises that i love in the spanish,also i personally have an ear for spanish words and study thier dialect with great intent,,and find many roots in thier words as pure greek,in fact i would say that the italians developed a language of thier own based on greek..where as the spanish over developed the greek laungage..to suit thier own culture..but the spanish can have thier quirks and down falls too.for instance i dont like the way they judge people in relegious ways.. its too draconian with a bisphoric excutioner wating....how ever yes they to love life the same way greeks do....and embrace it as the way u say..the biggest similaritys between the spanish and greeks i would say is the vive la vie...and the respect they have for a mans worth... where as the slav see u as ..competetion....and are hungry as wolves can be and dotn give 2 hoots what or who u are..at least when they not facing you.. in short ethically i would say the greeks and spanish are long lost brothers... and these are my personal experinces i dotn speak for the whole greek comunity...ty..

After the Great Schism ,the relations between the west and the east were just terrible.In the other hand Slavs(especially serbians)used to live with Greeks like they were the same ethnicity because both considered themselves as Byzantines.After the fall of constantinople and the byzantine empire,both serbians and greeks were under the Ottoman rule,they asked many times from the west countries for help but they get nothing.So they Greeks and Slavs shared the same problems and teamed up to remove the Ottoman Empire from their Backs.
Furthermore take as example the Balkan Wars,in the first as in the second one Greeks were team-mates with the Serbians,and when NATO bombarded Yugoslavia the Greek state aided with money and food the Serbian refugees.The main reason for the great connection of those two ethnic groups is the Religion,just like now.
We also have a lot in common with Italians cuz we live in the same climate conditions(mediterranean)but even if we are both christians we do not believe in the same doctrine and thats a great reason not to be close enough with each other plus that in WW2 Italians invaded Greece and make it a puppet state.

Greeks are related to the southern Slavs of the Balkans historically, culturally and racially (something that most Greeks don't know, immigrations of Slavs in Greece in the middle ages which eventually Hellenize). From your descriptions I assume you don't know much about those people.

The difference with the Greeks and the Southern Slavs are the years of communism and the language (which in the case of Southern Slavs is deeply influenced by the Greek language of the holy bible). Of course Greeks and Slavs are not the same but Greeks are much closer to Bulgarians than to the Spanish.

@ plostad. I agree with you 100% and bare in mind that that's how the Turks see you too. All these muslims want to feel related with European Christians and often make remarks like those.

It seems that you don't know much about Slavs, neither about Greeks!
What do you know about Southern Slavs and their culture:
-according to your question explenation Southern Slavs are not good looking, don't have moral values( family,respect,etc) and about some similar mediterranean mentality ( "relax" attitude, macho guys, discussing at the cafe terrace, etc,etc...). that means that they are ugly, unmoral people, which don't talk at the cafe terrace, and their men are feminized (not macho guys).

Greeks with Slavs (actually with Serbs) have good relations in terms of friendship and religion.

In the mentality is more likely with mediteranean people.As you said...."relax attitude", macho guys,discussing at cafe, ...

We have a good connection due to recent history and the Orthodox faith. Now if your talking about culture and mentality of the people, Greece clusters more with Southern Europe than with the Balkans.

I actually agree with you but thats only because I dont know much.

I take Spanish as a class and I have noticed that a lot of their traditions have parallel similarities with the Greek traditions.

It is true that their physical appearances and their mentalities are a lot alike. I know a few spaniards and Italians. And I can pass as a hispanic person (so I've been told) but I can also pass as an Arabic, Italian, Egyptian, and Turkish person (mainly because I look really Meditteranean).

I'd like to answer yes to your question, but unfortunately I can't. Not just religion, Greeks are strongly connected to Serbs in all levels. They're like brothers. I don't like it personally but I see it in every step when I'm with Greeks and also in Serbia. It's the inseparable link they have. Similar is also with Armenians and Russians, Bulgarians, etc. Not so much with Croatians and Slovenians.
I don't think it's true what you say about Lations. They're not cultrurally close to them. They may want to be, but trust me, they're not.

France and Romania have similar languages than Spain, Portugal and Italy

Greece have similarity only with orthodox slavic countries as Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria or Ukraine... but itÂ´s by the religion
