I am sorry but whoever told you that is ignorant. I have been in Turkey for 4 years and there are gay guys here but I dare say that they are like gay guys everywhere. Turkish men are like men everywhere. They are only going to hit on you if they are gay. If you are worried about it here, you should be worried everywhere you go.

Jodi
Turkey is a Muslim country and that religion is somewhat intolerant of homosexuality (as are others, not singling out one religon here). That said, in many countries it is not considered "gay" for men to be physically friendly: hugging, holding hands, etc. Has nothing to do with sex. Also, the idea of personal space is not as well-defined as in the US, so a man may stand very close to you when speaking, or may stare just from curiosity. My parents had a Turkish exchange student and he was an absolute delight. They went over there to visit and report that the people are wonderfully friendly. Don't mistake interest and friendliness for come-ons. Have fun, it is a fabulous country.

paul m
No, they are very friendly to everyone.

I'm 27 years old, spent all this time in Turkey, and I can confidently tell you that your question is based on "wishful thinking" rather than knowledge.

Enjoy your holiday.

Slick Rick
If its true I must be doing something wrong.
there are some tour operaters that offer gay holidays you could ask your travel agent.
not sure if there are any in ,Turkey good luck

Matt
What Jodi said is true. The men here are very "touch feely" with other men, but don't think anything about it. It's just a way of expressing friendship.

I don't think there are many homosexual men in Turkey, at least a lot less than I am use to seeing (I am from Southern California haha). But, I had a gay friend visit once and he was able to find a gay club in Istanbul. He said it was very bad though, and left within 5 minutes.

Are you gay and looking for this when you come? If so, then like anywhere, I am sure you can find it if you really search for it. But don't just start hitting on every guy that touches you because they might be homophobic or even get offended and want to hurt you ;-)

And... if you are asking because you are homophobic and don't want guys to hit on you... well, then... I guess all I can say is... don't worry. I don't think Turkish men go around hitting on other men very often.

Little Miss Sunshine
I hope not! Me & hubby are going in 3 weeks! I wouldn't have thought so, though!

Even though I moved to the US, after living in Istanbul for 13 years, you will be seeing men 'checking you out' but usually the cute ones. You have to be pretty good looking if your being checked out by our men. I thought some other boys were kinda cool if they weren't from Turkey. Usually they're looking because you don't look like one of them. Other than that, they like you.
Hope I helped

♫ ...Hey Godverdomde Engel™
Lol, of course not. Well, there might be a few homosexuals but you can't really be openly homosexual without being discriminated against or rejected by your family and environment. Those types of guys would really think twice, they're aware of the possibility of them being murdered the same day. Unfortunately, Turkey is a very homophobic country, I hope that will change soon.

P.S. look out for the beggars on the streets, they're rude and most of them aren't even really poor, they might just be richer than you. If you do see kids begging, give them food instead of money, their parents cripple them on purpose so that they can beg on the streets and make money for them.
