i am russian, so listen to my advice.
it will get really-really-REALLy FREEZING. the temperature depends on the place you go to, but in general, it's about -20 C. (sorry, i don't know how to translate in farenheit.)
It's safe to bring your girlfriend, all that skinhead talk is not true. We have lots of students from africa, so yeah.
just to be sure, always be with your girlfriend. If you're with her, there's no chance. Just don't stay out late at night in suburbs.
Some cultural aspects:
~russia is a developing country, so some stuff may not be as good as in us, like public transportation, public restrooms, etc. so you'll need to get used to this.
~ BUT! BY NO MEANS SHOW ANY DISRESPECT TO RUSSIA, ITS CULTURE, HISTORICAL PLACES! WE REALLY HATE THAT.
~ I would suggest you go to some russian cuisine palce to try our food.
Soemtimes people may be rude and not answer to your smile, but you just have to keep in mind that it's from a not-so-good life life.

In Moscow or St Petersburg for example it will be bloody freezing and yes you may have a problem with your girlfriend as they are still not used to foreigners especially black people. So stick to the main tourist sites and don't go off on your own downtown - you will get robbed.

in Russia in Moscow at Jan can be +10C or -30C...but how weather report says it will be not lower then -20C....
so at me is +8C and in Moscow -9C now....its safe....

It's usually cold in January (anything from 0 to -50C), but of course depends on which part are you planning to go. New Year's a big festival and everyone's on a holiday. The chances of anyone getting beaten up in Russia are reasonable, but if you stick to the more touristy bits you should be ok.

I was there in November a couple of years ago and it was -25 degrees, so have a guess what January's going to be like!
