I was an army house wife, and lived in Germany for 3 years. I totally know how you feel. I still have living in the states. What many americans did is get a job with AAFES. That's the American Armed Forces Exchange Service. They run like the grocery stores and stuff on military bases. You don't have be enlisted to work there, and once you get your clearances, you can live a regular civilian life off the bases while going to work inside of one. It's a pretty nice middle of the road position, as you get things for the Germans off the post that they couldn't get normally. I once had a chick pay me 10 euros for one package of Keebler cookies. (They aren't sold on the German market.) Also, most military bases have post offices, so you could also look into getting a postal job. That's government work, which means some benefits, and also civilian clearances. I'm sure you know that you just can't get to Europe and just stay there, not legally anyways. And if you're personable, there's always someone in the base who would be willing to help you. (Bribing doesn't hurt either.) Good luck!! |

You would need a work visa, maybe a nannys job? |
|

SUE

I read a lot of very good answers to your request.
I agree with all the people who are saying you need to check into things more carfully. Work Visa - very important factor. Unemployment - very important consideration. Red tape regarding international residency (depending on the country) also an important consideration.
Two things no one else has mentioned: You are only 18! It's a very young age for such a huge undertaking, and you travelled for 3.5 weeks! On vacation! You have NO idea what it's like to really live there. You have no idea how difficult it is to just pick up and move that far from your family.
Here's what you do: First, do some serious research. Check out cost of living (get some statistics, not just asking people here.) Find out what kind of work you could do, and how many hours a week you would have to work to make a living, and how much you could get paid. Remember, when you figure your cost of living: rent should be around one week's pay, so you can afford the rest of what you will need. HEALTH INSURANCE is a MUST (what if something unexpected happens to you?).
THEN: check out things like au pair work, and teaching English, if you think you could do such things. (You really need a teaching certificate/license to teach these days).
I can't downplay the possibility of going to University and taking a year of study abroad. That's what I did, and I had the time of my life. In many ways, it's STILL (many years later) the source of many of my best stories, and experiences. Once you have done that, you will have a feel for the reality of moving that far, and for what it will entail, and you can make contacts that can pan out into real, permanent jobs.
DON'T cash in your dream, just take it responsibly. You won't regret having done so. It will make the experience SOOOOOOOOOO much better for you.
Good luck! |

Save up money and go travel around a bit. Stay in hostels, meet new people. To live in Germany or really anywhere in Europe it can be a bit difficult because you'll have to get a work visa. And its even difficult to find a job then too. Good luck. |

Have you thought about becoming an au pair/nanny? You can live in the country, get a feel for the culture, have a place to live - AND get paid.
An important thing to consider is, are you good with children?
Best of luck to you in your endeavors. If I had it to do over again, this is the route I would have taken. |

i'd reccomend going to college and studying abroad... see what its like to REALLY move there.

I share your dream of living in Europe (at least for some portion of my life) Since you spent almost a month there I'm sure you recognize how expensive it is. If you're going to college try some study abroad programs. They'll give you a taste of living in Europe and if you still want to live there after college you should go for it. |

are you sure? you donT want to live in America?, because its not that easy moving from one place to another, you need to buy a new house, sell your old one, and you also need money for the tickets, think about it!! |

I spent 15 years in Europe and loved it. If you want to work there, it will be difficult unless you can get citizenship (a grandparent from one of the European Union countries may do the trick). Unemployment is very high, so companies need a very good excuse to hire citizens from outside the EU. |

OH MY GOSH! Well I know this doesn't help you, but i sooo badly want to live in England too! Everytime I see movies with the setting in England (The Holiday in particular) it just makes me want to move their sooo bad!
I plan on going to college in England. You should look into colleges, like The American Intercontiental University in London, or Anglia Ruskin! Those are 2 I've looked into!
But good luck, and I hope your dreams come true! |

You should pay attention to what Sue has written. I've lived in four different countries in Europe. In the old days I went to Norway and got a job pumping gas at a station. But I speak Norwegian so that helped a lot. Then I did a semester abroad in London, England. Then I went into the Peace Corps and worked and lived in Estonia for two years. Finally I got a teaching job in the Czech Republic. I was there for two years but I'm going back this year after a year back in the States.
Notice how education played a role in my life? It is so important generally speaking, but also for getting work in Europe. They like to see certificates, but more importantly, you need to be able to do a job that a local citizen can't do. So try to temper your desire to move with the fact that you need to complete your education before you can get a job that will pay you a living wage.
Good luck. I am jealous of your age and you enthusiasm. I know what you're going through as I went through the same emotions myself many years ago. |

I know how you feel, I live in Iowa. I would love to live in England or Germany too. I suggest that you apply to colleges and universities in these countries, if you are excepted, then great. If you want to work as well as going to university you will need to get a work visa. Good luck and have fun :). |
