Hello 'little woman',
Well - I have heard from experts that it IS a difficult language to learn. I grew up there from the age of 9 - and was fluent within 2 years ... but that's because I was a kid. My parents found it much harder - they were in their 40's.
The person who mentioned the verbs being the hardest thing - is so right.
For example:
in english we say... I go, you go, he/she goes, we go, etc...
In portuguese it's different for each person:
Eu vou, tu vais, ele/ela vai, nos vamos.
I think that's harder than learning english verbs.
Then, of course, there's the masuline / feminine words:
Generally words ending in'a' are feminine
words ening in 'o' are masuline.
So, you have to remember to put 'a' or 'o' in front of a noun depending on what it is.... eg: a casa / o carro.
A lot of people when learning can tend to put 'o' in front of every noun.
It is a lovely language to speak, though - and well worth the time & effort in learning.
I want to be there right now!!!!
Boa Sorte!
Bev

Not really. Quite frankly, English is one of the hardest languages of all. Portuguese has a structured grammar that is typical of the Latin family of languages and fairly direct pronunciation.

Remember that Brazilian Portuguese has a lot of dialect and slang in spoken form, but the basics of sentence construction are pretty simple.

It reeaaally helps to have a background in another Latin language- mainly Spanish.

It depends. Brazilian Portuguese is easier. I think it is as easy as French. Our verbs have many forms. For example, while you say:

I do
you do
he does
we do
you do
they do

we say:
eu faço
tu fazes
ele faz
nós fazemos
vós fazeis (old-fashioned and replaced by "vocês fazem")
eles fazem

But there are rules, which makes it easier to memorize all the verb forms.

I strongly advise you to try it, you will like it. By the way, a portuguese teacher who has learnt english would be a good choice because they might understand your first mistakes better and find solutions to help you avoid them. Good luck.

Hi! No it's not..it has just a hard pronunciation..not hard as in difficult to learn but a very strong accent..which sometimes is difficult for people to pick up one...like german for example..but it is easy to pick up after a while and the best part is it is a bridge to other latin derived languages like spanish and italian!
On my blog I have a part on some words and phrases you can learn in portuguese!

Portuguese is not so difficult to speak, more to learn. we have a very extensive grammar, but when we teach portuguese to foreigners,we teach the basics, only what u need, not the whole grammar (even we portuguese cannot handle all that grammar=) )
The pronouncing,i think its the least.U might have more problems to understand us than to speak our language, and ppl with understand u,dont worry! Good luck for ya!!

depends how devoted you want to be.!
I suppose anything is hard if you don`t put your mind to it.!

It depends....If you can already speak some neolatin languages (e.g. french, italian or spanish...) it's very simple portuguese!!

Luís
the main difficulty between Portuguese and English is the verbs. That is the most hard issue. There are some particular words and applications on the language that you could stay really confuse, but nothing that you could not resolve with practice.
Here is some basic words:

Thanks = Obrigado
Hello! = Olá!
Good Morning= Bom dia
Good Afternoon = Boa Tarde
Good Night = Boa Noite
Please = Por favor
