I want to travel with my boyfriend to Europe in April and we are trying to figure out a cheap way to travel? |
I really want to go to Athens, Rome and Spain but would also visit other countries. I am planning it to be about a ten day trip. Has anyone gone to Europe and traveled there themselves like on trains from city to city and has any tips for me? |

10 days! Well, two of those might be feasible but all three--kinda a stretch. First off, it might be best to fly into one city and fly out another, not cheaper but an idea. 10 days might not be long enough to really enjoy Europe, remember these are very old cities with lots to see. To go to Spain, Italy and Greece-- this might be easier to do with flights and not trains, if in fact these are where you want to go. Let me give you an idea, Rome to Athens (I’ve looked this up) you take the train to the water (cause Rome is on the other side of the boot) and they load the trains onto boats and the next morning you are in Athens.
Maybe visit closer countries or regions if you want to get more countries in. For instance, go to England and take the English Channel Train to France and take another train to neighboring countries. Another example visit northern Europe, Sweden, Denmark etc. Trains and Hostels (like mentioned above) are the BEST/CHEAP way to travel!! Another thing I like to do is go to yahoo (or Google) and type in “Free things to do in _________” Rome has an awesome list and so does London. BUT this doesn’t work for all cities. You can also save money by taking a night train and waking up in a new city (Hence the Rome-Athens). Using the eurail.com website is confusing and I found it best (and cheaper) to just pay for each leg of the journey as I went. They do offer passes though for 2, 3, etc countries or a single country.
I was in Rome for 3 days and that was not long enough. I was in England for 5 days and was ready to blow that popsicle stand! But because I flew, I couldn’t (Hence trains are more flexible). The important thing is to (PLAN!) figure out where you want to go within a place and gauge how long to spend time there. Also, try to make room for flexibility. I planned Florence to be a day trip thinking, eh, day trip on the way to Rome, see David visit the Birth of Venus--- Blah. Florence was AWESOME and because I planned for some flexibility, I stayed 2 days.
Just some advice, since flying to Europe is about 12 hr flight I find it best to fly into destination late in the evening that way you aren’t trying to stay awake all day.
I hope this is helpful!! |

Athens, Rome, and Spain in 10 days? Can't be done. Not unless you fly between all these places or don't want to see anything. People think Europe is easy to see in two weeks- it takes 2-3 days just to get to Greece from Rome! And then 2-3 days back again; Rome-Brindisi overnight, spend the day in Brindisi to wait for the ferry, overnight on the ferry, then Patras, then the bus trip to Athens. Or by train, Athens- Thessaloniki-Belgrade- Zagreb- Ljubljana- Trieste- Florence- Rome is about 4 days of straight train travel, if you're lucky. And Rome to say, Barcelona or Madrid is another 2 days of straight travel. With ten days, concentrate on one or two specific, connected areas. Want Italy-'plus'? first, don't bother with Milan or Naples. Try this- Rome-Florence plus either the Cinque Terra, or Venice and Ljubljana (Slovenia) , or Florence -Rome-Sorrento including Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri. If Greece is priority, then go to Athens (quickly), then Nafplio and Rhodos or take the time to get to Santorini and relax, or take the ferry to Turkey.
for Spain, go to Barcelona and Granada with either Toledo or Madrid and Avila, or a stop in the Dordogne region of France.
But ten days is pushing it- you'll spend all your time on trains. Get a copy of Rick Steves book "Europe Through the back Door"- if this is your first trip, it's the best thing you can read before you go. The library should have it. Here's his site:

I've done 8 solo trips in Europe totalling over two years on the road
EDIT*- Autumn knows what she's talking about! |

You're trying to see a lot in 10 days. The places you want to see a quite a ways apart.Stick to 1 or 2 cities because you'll need at least 1 whole day or more just between Spain and Italy. Eurorail is the best and fastest. Check out their website for rates. Try to fly into one city and out another. It may cost a little more but you'll save travel time and possibly some money. Youth hostels are the way to go and check the trainstations. Some people offer rooms in their homes. Always ask to see the room in either to make sure it's clean and safe. If they won't let you before payment, move on. |

It's not always best to use trains, sometimes planes can be cheaper. Here's a good article that talks about using budget airlines to travel for 20-50 bucks between some European cities:

Also you can find really cheap lodging in hostels.

I've only traveled to America. But you get special packages that you can take to fly over there, they're usually cheaper than just buying 2 tickets and come with more benifits. You can call the airport and ask which agencies are available that offer them. I dont know about traveling within Europe though - sorry.
Goodluck. |

I travel on trains - its most efficient. To save money, I also stay in hostels. Keep your wallet and valuables safe; Rome has the most crafty pick-pocketers! For specific info on each country try the Lonely Planet guidebooks..they saved my life in Peru and Bolivia. |
