Well, honestly, my husband is Armenian and him and his family have lots of problems there due to racial discrimination. They look more like middle eastern than anything, but they are called black. There are a lot of areas they can not go to because it isn't safe.
When I went to Russia there were no black people at all - even in the airport in Moscow. The only 2 black people we saw were from africa and were making money by dressing up in african tribal clothes and taking pictures with tourists (they really couldn't get other jobs).
I would say personally since you are a girl, if I was you I wouldn't go. If you were a guy I would say go with friends.
Maybe if you went in a group like from school or something and were in a big group all the time.
Honestly, I wouldn't risk it. There are lots of skin heads there that attack people of different races - it doesn't have to be black either, like I said, the middle easterners have the same problem.
Since you have darker skin, I would only go with a large group and never be alone. |

1) Don't go out to any "bad" neighborhoods
2) Don't go out in the subway, especially at night
3) Don't go out when its really late
I don't know why you would want to visit either of those 2 cities. It's 100% true what they say, there's a lot of racism. If I were you I wouldn't put myself in that kind of danger. IDK why people here say "don't worry you're female" etc... Even minority children get attacked and killed in those cities. :( |

Why so cynical?

Well...there are some racists everywhere, but come on, your concerns about racism are overblown indeed. One of my contacts on Yahoo Answers is black and she studies in Russia. I've never heard her complain, I've only heard nice things from her. |

Not all the people, not even a majority are racists out there, but - yes,
problems with rasism Do exist out there, even if 5% or 1%
of them are rasists it already could be a risk, but may be not much bigger risk then got robbed or got hit by the car - it is a big city at the end.
The rest - i'd suggest the same thing as Smart Blonde did and you'll be fine.
Good luck |

My friend just got back from Russia, she loved it and wants to go back as soon as possible. She went with a group of people thought so I don't know if that made a difference. As far as racism, just say you are from England or Australia. |

I am not sure what you mean about Racism? Russians and Americans are both white for the most part.
Do you mean Hatred?
I am american born and my husband is Russian born. My family loves him but I think his family hates me because I got married 3 months after the death of a family member...Whatever there 12,000 miles away. What can they do.
So far tho, no problems.
You should not have a problem. |

Russia is a beautiful really interesting country to visit. Just be prepared for the thousands of beautiful girls roaming the city and Mafia is big there so almost everyone has bullet proof glass in their cars these days. You will need lots of money there because it is very cosmopolitan and something like 90% of the males are drunks
Have fun! I did |

I wouldn't worry about the racism too much. If you go with a tour group, which is advisable, then other than an occasional stare you shouldn't any problems. Most large cities in Russia see enough tourists and exchange students from all over the globe, so don't sweat it. |

Your concerns about racism are overblown, especially if you are planning to stick to big cities. You are a female, if you dress nice and speak English (and behave like a classy American tourist) nobody is going to give you problems. Its one of the few places in the world where people like Americans more than Brits so don't say you are from the UK... |
