Most people go to Amsterdam for one of two things - sex and drugs. Five hours is enough to sample one or both of these. If you are in Amsterdam for more sensible reasons then it is best to stick to the Damrak area between Centraal Train Station and Dam Square for a bit of general sightseeing and shopping. Ann Frank's house is a bit far out and the queues too long to make it worthwhile. There are plenty of one hour canal cruises that leave from near the station, and the nearby SexMuseum is an amusing if somewhat tacky way to pass an hour or so, and there is always the Hash Marijuana Museum as well if that is your bag. That said, five hours is really no time at all. If you want to get s***faced on weed and visit the red light district then just make sure that you are not too off your face to be able to find your way to the airport/train station and catch your transport home. And for god sake, don't even think of trying to bring any strange substances back with you. Smoke them while you are there! |

its really simple to get from the airport to the train station (centre of town). takes about 25 mins and trains are very frequent, even on weekends.
it depends what you like doing
Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh museum or Rembrant house for art
Ann Franks house for history
flower market for colours
canal walking, go through town, check out red light district and coffee shops, take a tram ride (think tram 10) around the city circle.
visit club 11. it is great for a view of the whole city and is a really cool place to be. |

There are short tours available from the airport but are pricey, but if you don't mind the cost and want to see a bit of the country during a layover it's a nice option.
Otherwise, go to the Van Gogh Museum. That is a nice thing to do for a short time. |

Is this 5hrs total or 5hrs not including the time it will take for you to get to and from the airport and check in and what not?
I'll assume you still need to calculate your travel time and such so...
It takes about 30mins by train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal (yes as stated earlier trains are frequent) and assuming you'll be on an international flight I'll would be back at the airport 1 1/2hrs befor your flight so... that really only gives you about 2 1/2 hrs to do what ever in the city.
So my advice... go to the Van Gogh museum. From Centraal go to the VVV (tourist office just outside of the station) and get directions. I believe also you can but the ticket into the museum there so if there's a line at the museum you can cut. The museum itsself takes about 45mins-90mins to get through depending how long you want to stay. It takes about 15 mins to get to the museum via tram from centraal.
After the museum I would head back up to centraal and walk (if facing the station) to the left toward Singel canal there you will find a coffeeshop called "the Rokerij". Get a pre-rolled joint and smoke up, order a coffee or juice.
Return to the airport and before you go check in stop off at the oliebollen stand in the main hall (only there during x-mas time) and get some oiliebollen. |

I recommend the van Gogh museum; it's quite wonderful to see the originals.
For a very moving experience, visit the Anne Frank house--be sure to make a reservation.
It will be pretty cold, but it would be worth it to just walk around the city and view the lovely canals. |

The Rijksmuseum has a special about Rembrandt this year. The Van Gogh is always a good museum to visit. But I would choose a boat trip through the canals if it is your first time in Amsterdam |

Hi depends what u r into. Me and group of girlfriends went back in Feb. Some of us opted to visit Anne Franks house - if you are into that - very worthwhile. Others chose to visit coffee shop - they enjoyed lol.
We all did river trip but thought waste of time. The Red Light District is a must - for all lol. Hope you enjoy and get a bit of idea. Bye |
