Ideas for a holiday in Greece?

I have never been to Greece before and I am looking for a self-catering summer hol with my husband.

We don't drive and would prefer an apartment/hotel that is near the beach / town / sightseeing.

Does anyone have any ideas of resorts to try?

i went to an island called Zakynthos. Absoluteky gorgeous.
It is small so not as commercial as bigger holiday resorts, yet its lively enough for a great holiday, and great sight-seeing, we hired scooters(u dont need a licence as far as i know) but ther is excursions you can get as the island is so smell they take you anywhere you'd like to go.
It took bout 4hrs from Dublin so prob bout 3 from UK.
Id def reccommed here as its hot, friendly, lively, scenic and "the real greece" all in one!
amybe google it if you'd like more info.
Have a great trip wherever u go
xx

Greece is a beautiful country, I went to Athens a month ago & we went on a tour of the country, visited the islands of Poros, Hydra & Aegina, all very beautiful. You'll enjoy anywhere you go. Just be wary of the taxi drivers --they are scam artists!!

crete is nice you could try stalis its basicly one long road with shops bars etc and the beach isnt bad so theres plenty to do and plenty of cheap coach trips to water park etc.
look at the brochures carefully and do your research on the net and try the holiday review sites but bare in mind that you cant please everyone and what is one persons ideal place is not anothers.
dont forget to consider how long your airport transfer is and the times of your flight both there and back.
you will probably find that you will have to compromise on some things, its just a matter of the importance you place on certain things.
greece is a great place and the people are lovely and very friendly i am sure you will enjoy if you pick the right resort.

I would recommend Tolo. It's near the sea. It has a nice night life (not if you're in your early 20s), near great archaeological sites (Mycanae, Epidavros). You can also visit Nafplio, which is a very picturesque town and also was the 1 capital of Greece.

Hi, I have been to 4 greek islands, and I sugggest you try one of the larger Islands, either CRETE or CORFU.
They are both absolutely wonderful, steeped in culture.
In greece, I like the music, the smells, the people, and the food.
Since I first went to Greece, I have never wanted to holiday anywhere else. I have had to go elswhere as my other half has wanted to try other plces, but I have missed Greece :o(
I have added some links for you.

Check out the brochures. Check that the place has airconditioning. My sister went last year and was charged an extra £60 per room for cooling and even then it didn't work properly! Rip off.

you will love Greece its great and the people are so friendly and help full I stayed in Glyfada just outside Athens oh what a beautiful place and the sights to see did a day trip around some of the small Islands they were superb and really was not long enough foods great and plenty of tavernas have a ballhttp://www.viviun.com/AD-11538

Personally I would recommend Corfu, lush and wonderful. Can I suggest that before you decide, have a look at tripadvisor.com for some honest advice/recommendations etc.

I am half Greek. The thing with Greece is that all of the Islands are so individual and so whether they are the best place for you or not is subjective.
Someone else mentioned Zakynthos here. I hate Zakynthos!...well I don't hate it exactly but as it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953 it has far less character than many other Greek islands.
How about Cephalonia? (very green) or possibly somewhere near Chania (Beautiful town) in Crete.
The problem of wanting to be near the beach/town is that that is where all the 18-30's hang out. If you really want to get a look at the 'real' Greece, you might have to sacrifice the town idea and settle for one of the beautiful little villages on the coasts. For that I'd recommend lesvos or Paxos but as I say, it's subjective so lots of research is the answer. Greece is a wonderful country. Enjoy!
