Ideas for our trip to amsterdam!!? |
My fiance and i from Scotland (Glasgow) are off to amsterdam on Thursday evening and coming back Sunday night. We are not into art (shame on us i know) but we would like some ideas of funky things to do. Any suggestions? We know if we dont plan ahead we will just end up spending all 3 days in a cafe or bar which i know is a great plan anyway :) , but it would be nice to add a wee bit of something different into the trip. Is there any wine or beer tasting places? Good places to eat? We love to try new things. Colleagues have suggested sex theatres (where couples have sex on a stage and the audiece get drinks vouchers and have a giggle) which as much as its something wacky and funny i am not sure thats our thing!! Let me know if you have any ideas!
Thanks |

- Take a free ferry on the backside of Central Station, if that's not enough, take a canal tour (€8)
- Have dinner on the Zeedijk, the second oldest street of Amsterdam. Not too many tourist, and a lot of good affordable restaurants.
- See a concert in the Paradiso, the 'temple of Rock' in a former church.
- Rent a bike. Best way to get around, and a fun way to experience the 'amsterdam way of living'.
- Forget Heineken! Drink a beer at 'Brouwerij 't IJ', near the windmill, open daily from 16:00 to 20:00. Great beers, local vibe. Really off the beaten track since all toursit flock to the Heineken Experience.
- Visit the replica of the famous VOC-ship 'Amsterdam', close to Central Station.
- Take a free walking tour with Sandeman's, leaving daily at 11:00 and 13:00 from the Damsquare. Pretty ok tour.
- Go to the Science Museum (NEMO) next door.
- Or at least enjoy the view from their roof-top terrace.
- Be impressed by the newly build library. Free internet and roof terrace as well. Next to Central Station.
- And since it's valentine: enjoy the most romantic straws along the canals. Most picturesque is the Jordan area.
- Avoid the Damrak with all the tourist-traps.
- Visit -of course- the Red Light District, but don't miss the cute 'Begijnenhof', the most hidden silent spot in town. It's next to the Spui.
- Try 'Haring' (raw fish) at the Albert Cuyp market, in the lively neighbourhood called 'de Pijp'.
- Instead of the sex-theatres: buy some high-quality hash from one of the better coffeeshops (ask a local, or buy the €5 smokers guide) and make love like never before.
Enjoy! Greetings from Amsterdam. |

If the weather isn't to cold there are always trips on the canals. |

definitely go to the Sex museum-what a laugh
just have a good wander around and soak up the atmosphere
maybe go on a canal trip-worth it just to see the sights
also visit the red light district, it's an eye-opener
and all police protected, so you will be safe
I'm not that much into Art but I did enjoy visiting the Anne Frank museum
You will enjoy it all
I'm from Glasgow too, so have a great time |

Theres a Madame tussauds over there, and a sex museum, which is worth a look, as its quite a laugh! Aside from that you have Anne Franks house. Some of the cafes are really good as well, especially one called Lost In Amsterdam(which we spent most of our time in!), and The Doors cafe is worth it too. Near a street called singel, there is an amazing little breakfast cafe, and it dfoes the most amazing pancakes ive ever tasted, and quite cheap as well. Have Fun!! |

Canal boat trip, ask in Hotel Reception for bars and cafes where the locals eat so you get the real atmosphere, also check with them what is going on in the city. There are evening guided tours to the Red LIght District if that's your thing.
Have fun. We loved our visit. |

Try the Heiniken museum, Free beer and glass (well there was when I was there!)
Canal tours!
Or there's the Nemo museum, Its kinda science based but you get involved. Silly things like making big bubbles, science experiments and an awesome view from the cafe roof over Amsterdam, we spent quite a few hours there just having a giggle.
There is of course the Ann Frank house which is worth seeing but can't actually be described as light hearted!
You will have to go to the red light district just for a laugh, all my hubby and I do is walk thru it and giggle at all the sales men trying to vie for your money and at the state of some of the 'girls'. But we have never left the street we just walk thru!
Get a map and have a walk around some of the older parts of the city, apart from all the Sex, Drugs and alcohol on offer it is a beautiful city.
Hope you have fun.
P.s its a shame you don't like art as there are so many art museums to choose from including a modern art one and the van gogh. Although you should head towards the van gogh museum as there is a great park nearby where me and mate played on the giant piano embedded into the floor for ages!! (we had been drinking all day tho!!) |

I will go there too in a few weeks (I hope) and I will make a tour with a small ship there and see the "grachten". )) also I will go to the dam and to madame toussauds and other museums.
I have heard there is a sex museum also )) and some red light district. But it is not very nice to go there I think.
Also you can go the Anne Frank museum if you are interested in that.
And there is one street with much restaurants. |
