If I went to Russia for a year, would I become fluent? |
I want to go there when I graduate in a year and a half as a gap year, and I am wondering, if consittering I have a pretty basic grasp on the language now, I could become fluent after about 8 to 12 monthes of living there with no english speaking companions. I'd want to gat a job that delt with people a lot if that could help, butr I'm wondering how worthwhile it would even be? Additional Details all i really get at this point is the grammer, cases, genders, and that sorts of things, I can read it very well almost as fast as english, and I can write it even better, Often I get russian letters mixed into things I am writing in english, what I'm asking more or less is wheather I would be able to pick up on the accents better, as well as more vocabulary by then? |

Russian language is one of the most complex major languages in the world.
I don't think you'd be fluent.
I've been speaking this language since birth and my vocabulary is still sub par.
Way too many variables, tenses, etc |

Spending a year in Russia and working there are neqaimpossibilities....that's just the reality of the situation. Russia has extremely restrictive visa regulations. See 1st site below and read section under "Entry Requirements." See 2nd site to research visa requirements. You might have a better chance if you enrolled in a language school and went on a student visa. This is gonna take some work. |

I studied Russian for a year and a half. It is not tough to speak loosely, but to master the conversation will take you more than one year. Living there will help, but they speak in cases, and that is tough to transition into if you are not familiar with that kind of speaking. |

I don't know! Passing gas can occur in any country, and you don't have to be there very long for it to happen. If you don't want to have flatulence, just be sure to stay away from gassy goods, like beans, cabbage, cucumbers, peaches, etc
Oops! You didn's say flatlulent! My Bad lol hahahahahaha |

Yes you will be fluent as long as you are interested in learning Russian.
Best Wishes! |

It sounds like a long visit to Russia would polish off your knowledge of the language. I think that you would probably become fluent in speaking in a matter of weeks rather than months, seeing as you already read it and write it well.
I learned Dutch in the Netherlands within 4 months from scratch, but I knew how to go about learning a language, and I already had German, which made it a lot easier. I'd say you would do very well indeed. |

I don't know. I think you should become fluent in English first. |

Well, if you spent most of your tiime with Russians then you would become pretty good. Of course your ability to learn languages, your desire to keep learning once you get there will also play a role. I spent over a year in a Russian speaking country had a good grasp of grammar and everything before I went over there and I got good, still am pretty good and can speak in almost any situation but would still like to improve in some areas. I did use quite a bit of English and Russian so that held back my progress a bit.
Note: I would not go over there thinking that when you come back you'll have a job offer just because you speak Russian. But if you want to go for life experiences then go for it! |

Go to north-east Ukraina - they speak russian perfectly -
and you'll skip all the little miseries of daily life in Russia - which can be really hard -
Other reason to go there : bureaucracy on strangers is not as paranoid and dantesque as in Russia .In Ukraina you'll be welcome always - in Russia sometimes, and you'll never really know why. |
