I think you will find something special in any country you decide upon - but my favorites are Spain, Italy and a toss up between Ireland and Portugal. If you are limited on time, you will probably want to choose three countries with a close proximity to each other. If you are traveling by rail, Rail Europe has passes for countries with connecting borders - so this is something to keep in mind. http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm?WT.mc_id=Google_raileurope_com&WT.srch=1
You are going to want to consider what you want to do and what your interests are. Are you interested in ART & History? If so, you would love Italy. If you are interested in the outdoors, Switzerland is a no brainer for hiking, biking and other outdoor activities. Shopping? Well, London, Paris or Florence are good bets. Partying? Well, Amsterdam is a good one.

Rick Steves has some good advice. Check out his website:

Buy some good travel books and have fun planning.

Happy travels!

if you want to see same staff that all USA sow you can go in EU. But if you want to spent nice time, spending nothing then you need to visit:
Romania, Serbia and Croatia.

Italy, i was there its sooo cool! one minute youre skiing and the next youre sweating and laughing at the leaning tower of piza.
Ireland, gr8 views and country and lovely walks. if you get sick of the country quickly thered probably be a good big city not too far away and not too close.
denmark, hans christian anderson, lego land, + theres a really good festival on in the summer.

Germany, Switzerland, Italy. They all border each other for a nice train straight down or up. I've lived in Germany and Switzerland, there are a million places to go and see.

Germany has cologne, berlin, hamburg, munich, and about 10 other smaller areas.

Switzerland has Zurich for big cities and tons of gorgeous sightseeing and hiking, Hit up interlaken. Hell, the trainride through switzerland is worth it.

Italy. Are you kidding? Milan, Cinque Terra for beaches, Florence, Venice, Rome, ect....

A can't miss trip

All depends what your looking for,all have lots of history, old world charm ect ect .I think where ever you go you wont be disappointed, before you decide on Switzerland are you 50+ with no financial problems if so that's an option,Europe is so varied in cultures. If possible avoid capitol cities, might sound odd but I've discovered It's not the real essence(southern Italy WOW)whatever you decide on make the most of it ,don't let things your not familiar with put you on a downer. One idea might be to visit your ancestral home(unless your a native American) happy hols as we say
