I really enjoyed both Italy and Greece, but I did not get to see as much of Italy.
Italy - We stayed in Venice and explored northern Italy. Northern Italy is one of the wine regions and is the foothills of the Alps. Castles perch on mountain sides, and are easy to get to from the highways. For a small fee, you can explore these old castles and fortifications. Some of them, however, are still owned privately... Venice was beautiful, but a little crowded. Shopping and dinning is their main source of income. It's cheaper to stay on the mainland and take a ferry in, but if you'd like to stay in the old section, be sure to reserve a hotel ahead of time. Parking is also expensive, but 12 euro will get you a day pass to use the water taxi on the Grand Canal. Don't even bother with maps once in the old section of Venice. The names on the map do not match the names on the buildings - regardless, it was entertaining to get around.
Greece - You can see a lot of Greece in a small amount of time, if you have your own transportation. The beaches are unbeatable, especially off-season. We found beaches completely vacant on warm and beautiful days. Also during off-season, pensions and hotels are much cheaper. We were way under-budget by the time we came home. Depending on what you want out of your trip, there are different places to go and things to see. We like to stay off the beaten path and to explore on our own. Nafplio, Pylos, Delphi, Mystra, Meteora, and Horefto were some of our stopping spots - but we also cruised back-roads to see how people really lived away from the tourist sites. The wine and food in Greece, along with the mountains, beaches and ruins makes for an amazing trip. I would go back to the Peloponnese in a heart-beat.
Happy travels! |

I absolutely LOVED Italy. I went to Venice and spent the day just roaming the streets and shopping. The venders and sales people were incredibly friendly. Prices were high but I haggled some of them down. I ate dinner at a very cozy little "hole in the wall" restaurant where I met up with a group of friends. The owners of the restaurant treated us well and made us feel very at home and welcome. Afterwards, we met the rest of our group in a HUGE outdoor cobblestone courtyard. I bought some food to feed the pigeons and was promptly attacked by a large group of the birds. I screamed, threw my food in the air and ran like hell while my friends all laughed at me. HA! Good memories. The only "negatives" were the driving (CRAZY drivers over there!) and everything was extremely expensive. Gondola rides were $80 and not worth it to me but I took some fabulous photos of them and didn't feel I'd missed out on anything. Never been to Greece. |

I love both these places. People are really friendly there! i would suggest going in April-June and avoid July-August, because the people there are usually really fed up with tourists at the end of the season... |

I would unreservedly recommend Italy for a vacation. I have lived in Greece and particularly Athens. Though I recommend some islands (Corfu, Aegina), I cannot recommend a vacation in Athens where the people seem rude, haughty and inhospitable. Greece has a word for hospitality- philotimo. This is still in evidence in the villages in the south and on some islands especially where the islanders are not fleecing tourists. Prices have risen so it is no longer a cheap option. To find the old Greek hospitality, I recommend anywhere along the Aegean coat of Turkey and also in the south of Italy.
that said, Greek light is remarkable, and nothing compares with the thrill of finding Byzantine churches still in use- you cannot do this in either Turkey or Italy where some classical ruins are better preserved than they are in Greece. |

I have been to most of the Greek islands over the last few years and have made several trips to Athens. I would un-reservedly recommend Greece for a vacation. The people are extremely friendly, English is widely spoken and the country is beautiful. |

Italy is full of crime, Greece is much safer to visit. I have been to both places. They are both beautiful but I like to feel secure and not get pick pocketed so Greece is better for that purpose. The beaches are great, the people are friendly, the food and wine is fantastic. They also have islands to explore. |

I live in Greece and I love it here for a vacation. Things are very expensive and the dollar is only worth 3/4 of a Euro which makes things even more expensive. But I think it is worth it in the long run! It so beautiful in the summer and islands, food and general experiences you will have here will definetely be fantastic. Sorry, I have never been to Italy although I am sure it is quite similar to Greece and equally as beautiful. |

I have traveled Italy extensively, I loved, every part of this place, The food, the men, the clothes, the culture, the language, the people....My favorite of all time is Lake Como, Lugano Italian side off course, up North of Italy HOWEVER, they do not have something that Greece has HANDS DOWN,,,the islands and the lovely beaches, Italy has not got the nicest beaches, you cant compare them to Greece...As far as Greece is concerned, its the weather the sea, the islands, the beaches, also the food,. So why not combine both and see both places....There are places in Italy that you will not see in Greece and there are places in Greece that you will not see in Italy....Hope this helps.... |
