I've spent two fortnights about 15 years ago based in Athens, when my daughter was doing her 'A' level in Classical Civilizations. Back then, on Sundays, you could get in to all the ancient sites free, don't know if that still applies.
Athens is a city where you can walk to all the sights, and you won't get lost, because you can see the Acropolis from almost everywhere. There are also day trips you can book at reasonable cost to go by bus to Delphi, Epidavrous, some of the islands, etc.
I don't know if I could just choose a few places to go. There are all the historic gems (like the Acropolis) to see, many museums, the markets (especially the meat, fruit and vegetable ones), and shops. Even after a total of a month there, I am sure there were things we missed. We did like the daily changing of the guard outside the Parliament and the President's Palace, and the nearby public gardens. |

I'd devote a full day to the Acropolis and other ruins. Take a walking tour or a good guidebook in order to fully appreciate what you are seeing.
Then walk around the old quarter - the "Plaka". It is very touristy, but still pretty.
Then spend half a day in the National Archaeological Museum.
Those are the must-see sights. After that, you should consider spending any extra days in other parts of Greece instead of more time in Athens. |

Visit the Acropolis and the surrounding area (Plaka, Agora), eat greek food (feta, pites, souvlakia, lamb kleftiko),
go to bouzoukia (not my kind of entertainment but you can find clubs everywhere in the world, bouzoukia not).
Buy clothes with greek patterns (very boho chic) for you or your friends. You can find also good quality leather items (clothes, shoes, bags etc).
If you have the time, go to Sounio and watch the sunset. |

Take the tram down to Microlimani (tiny harbour). Great waterside restaurants - not kidding about waterside - don't drop your knife and fork, they'll go in the sea. |
