There is a growing number of racist attacks in many Russian cities by Nationalists and skinheads. There are more xenophobic feelings in Russian cities than other European cities. While things may be OK for you, and probably will if you use common sense, the chance of violence against you because you are dark skinned is still greater in Moscow and St. Petersburg than other places.
While it's not right, it's the way things are now. |

The British Embassy in Russia states 2 ethnic groups that should take "special care" while in Russia...they are Asian and Afro-Caribbean. Says nothing about Africans. Normal Russians are not racist, just ones who are Skinheads and a few other radical groups. St. Petersburg has the worst reputation for Skinheads, so in Moscow you should be ok. The bottom line is that yes, there are racists in Russia, but there are racists in every country in the whole world! Good luck to you! |

One thing I can tell you definitely, is that you will stand out. There are few black people in Russia (relatively many in Moscow, of course), so you're very likely to get second glances on the streets.
However, if you're going legally, get a decent job, etc., you should be fine.
The average Russian is either ignorant of or couldn't care less about racism. You're not likely to be discriminated against at the workplace - in fact, your employer and colleagues might be extra curious about you because of where you come from.
Your main concerns, actually, should be the cost of living and communication. If you don't speak Russian, and if you're not going to be working in your native language - you're in for a rough time, as the language is difficult. Although, seeing as you're definitely foreign, people should be more inclined to help you out.
For safety - general rules of living in a big city apply, really. |

Maybe not Moscow but try other European cities. |

I spoke to black guys who went just after the wall came down and they loved it. Now a bit of trouble because out will stand out as a foreigner and people will want money from you. That's all. |

why wouldnt it? it may be kinda wierd for them but who wants not to move somewhere becuase they dont want people to be racist? unless you read up on it and it says bad things about black people russia, it shoudnt make a difference i dont think |

Why would being Black have anything to do with it? If you are legal to travel, and have a work visa, and can find a place to live, go for it! What a cool idea! |
|

Rome

it would, people are not racist, but the skinhead gangs are, they're under massiver crackdown though. |

Moscow is used to seeing people of different races and nationalities and people won't look at you funny like it might happen to you in small towns or in the country. But Moscow has become very dangerous, you have to be very careful about where you go, especially when it gets dark and less crowdy.
Plus it's the most expensive city in the world. So if you want to live there, make sure you have a well paid job. Most people in Moscow who have average income live under poor conditions. Race is and is not an issue there. Like I said before, people won't look at you funny because you're black, you can find any race in Moscow. But there is a high rate or race-related murders so if I were you, I wouldn't move there. I wouldn't even if I wasn't black. |
