In 1990 Greece was a third world country, why are you a first world country in the present? Fast economic grow

hi, I´m from italy
I was in 1990 Visiting your country as a turist
in that time, I saw many povertry, Many children asking for money
you are as your Neighbors turks And Macedonians
(Not as much as the Albanians)

but I turned to your country because I see than your country is wonderful (monuments, history), and now you are changed Completely
now, you don´t have nothing of third world country (as 18 years ago)
Now you are a developed country (as italy, spain, malt)

how has you changed so much in just 18 years?
Additional Details
in the past, when you were a poor country, many greeks came Illegally to italy
(how in the present, Romanians, Moroccan, Tunisian and Albanians do)

Oh, really? I came back from Italy, where I lived most of my life, only two years ago.
If you are not rich you cannot survive in Italy, and the life of a common employee is much more limited there than it is and it has been in Greece for the last 40 years.
Should I also make reference to the largest immigrant population in the U.S.A. which after the Irish is the Italian one?
It seems that some people have forgotten the popular immigrant songs of their country. And the old films of the Italian "realism".

Greece was never a 3rd world country. But your country (FYROM) was and will always be one. Cry baby, cry.

greece was never a 3 world country, even in the period of hounta greece was economicaly developed...
and also greek were never immigrate to italy, greeks immigrate to canada,us,germany,australia.......

also to be accurate turks are not as poor as you think, have you see their economy status???
i can clearly see that you are a skopian troll, only that one would refered to the "makedonians"
italians
1st dont use this word
2 you would make more accurate examples of poor countries like albania, bulgaria, and other neighbours.....
shame on you once again....

What are you talking about? Greece was never a 3rd world country. Maybe you visited another country and mistook IT for Greece.

What I understand from your question is you have an inferiority complex which causes to some misunderstandings of you. So you mean the United States is the fourth or fifth world country as millions of beggars living on it?

Greece joined the EU in 1981. If Greece has improved in 18 years very well, that means Italy's improvements are not so quick and Italians are lazier than Greeks.

What is your arrogance coming from?

Dear sir/madam,
I believe that you are truly mistaken here, perhaps it wasn't Greece you were visiting, or you're someone trying to wind the Greeks up , but Greece has never been a third world country !!
I have been going to Greece for the last 20 years, my family and I have been all over the country and we have never come across begging children or poverty !
Greece is changing, just like any other country but I really don't know what you're talking about .
Sorry, I don't mean to sound offensive at all, but you must have got mixed up .

I have been here 20 yrs from the UK and I have seen nothing/and saw nothing of what you are talking about. If you are an example of an Italian tourist - I suggest you stay in your own country. I went to Spain 21yrs ago and I saw more poverty and drugs in 2 weeks than I have seen in 20 yrs in Greece!
Thousands of Italian tourists who flock to Greece every year obviously haven't had the same experience as you ..... and as I live in an area which is overloaded with Italian tourists in August (Epirus) I can tell you one thing that I have noticed - Greeks have much more respect and class than the tourists I have witnessed. Greece was never a 3rd world country!

Greece was never as you described.
Greeks immigrated mostly in Germany - Australia - USA and not in Italy. The Albanians though choose Italy and Greece to immigrate. I bet you are not Italian. You are another troll! Your question was posted in order to insult Greece and Greeks.

It is obvious that you visited another country and even more obvious that you are not an Italian.
There is nowhere in Greece a place where children would ask for money like peasants, and OF COURSE there wasn't a reason for a Greek to ESCAPE from Greece and come to Italy in 1990.
In 1990 many Greeks were going to study to Italy, something that you obviously ignore.
In 1990 Greece wasn't a third world country.
It was though a country that was not developed, of course it's right. And it's right that Greece now IS a developed country.
When I went in 1995 to Germany I had a cultural shock, but when I visited France in 2006 it was a normal experience to me.
Yes, EU changed GREECE. We are a developed country and it's true.
This envy is only an element that someone can find in our Balkan neighbors, that accuse Greece for everything that goes wrong to them, instead of concentrating to their own powers.

cpinatsi
Greece has never been a 3rd world country, actually there is much more poverty and homeless people in 1st class 1st world countries, such as the USA or UK. Sad but true.
And you are reported, because this is not a travel issue and your only motive is to insult Greece.
As for going illegally to Italy, that cannot have happened in 1990, as we were a EU member since 1980, so obviously we could go and work anywhere in Europe legally.
Unless.... you are confusing Greece with some other country, which is at the moment illegally using a Greek name, and that could create a confusion. That is indeed a much poorer, less civilised country, that was not and won't be in the EU unless theri attitude changes.

Dellarovere
I happen to be more Italian than one can imagine (with a family history dating 1.000 years) and I belong to the fourth generation of Italian immigrants in Greece (they immigrated here not of poverty but for commercial reasons).
Therefore I am entitled to make these comments:
1. In 1990 Greece was already a very developed country, with no comparison with the poor Italian South, where poverty still exists as Northern Italians still keep discriminations towards the other half of Italy.
Not to mention that territories of the middle of Italy, like Umbria, are still financially undeveloped.
2. Rome happens to be the most beautiful city in the world, but in its suburbs poverty and lack of essential comforts is more than obvious.
3. Greece, as a touristic country receives lots of Italian tourists, especially in the islands. I have observed their lack of currency, and their stiffness as to what they order for lunch and dinner, not to mention that many go to the Ionian Islands, fish illegally, and sell the fish in Italy (That happens mainly in Cefalonia and Lefkas), getting thus some extra income.
4. Greeks as from the 60's can afford to go out for lunch or dinner almost every day, and they really spend a lot, while in Italy people can afford to go out only on Saturdays and only for a couple of drinks.
5. Greeks as from the 60's own their own houses as that's a priority for them.
6. Greeks as from the 60's when going to the Super Market they buy quantities while in Italy the majority buy only what covers everyday's needs.
7. On the contrary, we have formal Italian communities of Italian financial immigrants in Athens and in Rodos, while there are not Greek ones in Italy.
8. Greeks are more educated, speaking foreign languages as from the 60's while in Italy no other language is spoken but Italian.
9. If really Italian, I expect a comment in the Italian language. Even a phrase....
