In russia?

when foreigners go to russia are they welcoming and nice to americans? Or i should say mexican americans? does anyone know how foreigners are treated when visiting in moscow or st.pettersburg? I hear alot of bad things about that but i dont really want to believe that about such a beautiful country, with such interesting language and people... what are your thoughts?

no. they are rude and obnoxcious. most of them anyways. especially if you are of mexican descent, it is truly not fair, that is the way it is

If you know some Russian, you'll be fine. Just don't expect everyone to speak English. Also, if you ask for directions and the person says that they don't know, then they REALLY don't know, they're not just trying to get rid of you. Foreigners are treated just like any other stranger - with mistrust at first, but they'll warm up to you. On the off chance you meet a person that's prejudiced towards Americans (although these people are rare), just say you're Mexican. Russian people seem to like Mexicans more, I don't know why...Don't walk around smiling and looking like a tourist - that just invites crooks. When you're in the subway make your face expressionless to blend in better.

I don't see why there should be a problem. Just make sure you read up on the customs and what's considered acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, because that's when misunderstandings occur. Like in any country.
As above, probably not the best idea to wear an I heart NY shirt there either...lol.
Moscow and St. Petersburg are really beautiful cities, especially SP:).

Irene
in most Russian cities and towns foreigners are really welcome. Moscow and St.Petersburg .... hmmm... i wouldn't really say so. people living in Moscow are not welcome even to people from other Russian cities. in Moscow a foreigner can be cheated in the market, shop or taxi. the prices for a foreigner can be as twice as high than real ones.

I'm South east Asian and I would say I was treated better by Russians than by east Asians . It's an awesome country.

Mel
I went to Russia this past summer and, in my personal opinion, the Russians weren't very welcoming. First of all, hardly anyone there speaks English, unless they are trying to get to to buy something. Secondly, it's not very safe there either. There are loads of pickpocketers and you always have to stay in groups when going out. Also, the prices for foreigners are higher because a lot of times they try to scam you. Besides thet, the sights are beautiful. Just be aware of that and be sure you have a visa in your passport or they won't let you in.

Carli's Game
russians love mexicans because they know how hard it is to struggle. americans have a rude attitude so don't be suprised if a common insult gets you beat up in an alley somewhere. most russians prefer if you try your best to follow the norms and try the language. and never refuse a drink, but do not mention anything about communist crap or they will likely hit you. other than that bloody behave yourself.

russkimuzhik
Yes, they are welcome.

Well, when in Rome, do as the Romans. Right?

So, when in Russia, do as the Russians.

Sure, some foreigners get dirty looks, but its not like Russians are going to call the Mafia when they see a foreigner.

Of course, theres gonna be people who welcome you, and some who don't.

But seriously, don't go into Russia wearing a 'I (heart) NY' shirt. Thats disrespectful. Also, don't try to hard for acceptance.

Mostly people are trying to be nice with tourists , but jf cause it depends on your own behavior - if one is polite people arepolite with such person. But sometimes a misunderstanding can appear. For example, some foreigners think that we are rude cause we don't smile with every "hello", "please", "bye" e t.c. Or, on the contrary, in Russia it is pretty unpolite to say straight "Excuse me, I need to visit a bathroom". Better to say "Excuse me, I'll be back soon".
