Well Kitty, i know a lot about Turkey (although never been there), and i know that your country is more european than asian.
Your culture is more similar to mine, comparing to others like, for ex, my neighbour Morocco.
But i must admit, as a westeuropean, that are a lot of stereotypes about Turkey.
Mostly because of the religion and the history.
As you well know, religion is one of the main factors that contribute to wars, deaths, sadness, anger, etc etc.
Long before i heard about muslim terrorists, i watched in the news, the catholics and protestants killing each other and putting bombs in Northern Ireland.
As a catholic kid i felt confuse, because that wasn't the message, Jesus preached 2000 years ago.
As i was growing up, i start to realize this world is ruled by mean people without any scruples.
Most of the times our leaders use emotional arguments to win our support and hearts.
Of Course, the religion factor is the most powerful.
But, don't be offended, wouldn't this world be a better world without religions? (like John Lennon sang in Imagine...)

PS - about Turkey's stereotypes, my brother already went to Turkey on business and he told me that turkish women are really beautiful an hot!
That's a bad stereotype? hummm... think not...

hawaiian_shorts91
1) That Turkey is a conservative Islamic country
2) That Turks are evil
3) That Turkish girls are hairy
4) That Turks are cruel and oppressive
5) That all Turkish women wear the headscarf
6) That the Arabic alphabet is used for Turkish
7) That Turkish is similar to Arabic
8) That Turks actually speak Arabic
9) That Turks are murderous and jingoistic people
10) That they're dirty and stupid
11) That they all have a nationalist agenda
12) That the men all have huge moustaches
13) That they all "smoke like Turks"

I first visited Turkey a couple of years ago and am going back in a few weeks - I love the place! As a single mum with a young child, I was aprehensive but knew it was OK but other round me were so wrong! They said it was backward, dirty, I would be ripped off, wasn't safe for a woman on her own, I would have to cover up, i'd get terrible stomach bugs etc. oh, and the men were all sleazeballs.

What I found was a delightful, clean country with wonderful, caring people and I had the best time of my life! Compared to some other places in Europe I had visited, it was far superior and has put me off much of Europe for good - I will always get a great holiday in Turkey. OK, I didn't go to the English chav resorts but I wouldn't do that wherever I visited.

common mistake no.1: the belief that Turkey is a conservative İslamic country

common mistake no.2: that all the Turkish women cover their heads

common mistake no.3: that Turkey uses arabic alphabet (yes, I actually have met lots of westerners who think like that. Btw, they were all university graduates.)

common mistake no.4: that turkish people only eat kebabs

"Turks ( Ottomans) massacred Christians"..

Geez, even a primary school student can understand that after 600 years of having Christian nations as vassals and if they are still Christians, nobody was killed just because of their religion.

Nobody wants to question the betrayal fact.

Mamadou
In France, people think that all Turks have a kebab business.

Also in Europe, everyone seems to think that Turks are dumb, cruel and ugly. That's the cliché which is very common, unfortunately.
But of course we know that this is just a prejudice completely mistaken.

In the past, I remember that I used to think that Turks were Arabs and racist ( turkish consulate refused to give me a visa), but finally I understood that this was also a wrong stereotype . Some people and friends explained it to me, both in real life and here on the internet.

PS : Stereotypes exist everywhere :
In Europe, people think that Blacks are stupid and lazy, that Arabs are robbers and islamists, that Jews are rich and selfish, etc.
There are also "positive" stereotypes sometimes : In Africa, people tend to think that every young White girl is pretty, that every White tourist is very rich, etc.

turks are dangerous islamics and it is totally false, i've been a lot of times in Istambul and i love the city and his people

Sheesh! And this is about the most technologically advanced empire of the 15th and 16th century! Not to mention a multicultural one!

Right now I'm yawning and scratching my belly actually. Sounds very Turkish no? >:-D Damn work tomorrow, hate to work on saturdays

Kate
I've not heard so much that we're a strict islamic country just that the turks smoke alot. That annoys me because as in the newspaper a few months ago we were way down the tables for smoking. I also hate that we're viewed as a dirty country - I just don't see that!

Turkey. The men have moustaches and smoke a lot. However Turky has supplied the world with the best desert (Baclava) and the worlds most beautiful women in (my opinion) Gulben Ergen. I love the place actually!

We are barbarians .

Sick man of Europe .

For you.. ALANA

Racist is a big word,, do you know what you are saying,,

I never heard Turkish being called Racist ,,

Turkish are the last Nation on earth to be labelled Racist .. check our history.it includes most of your history too.

No my dear, many tags can be pined on Turkish, just like every other nation, we have our own share.. but racist is not one of them ,,and not a tag that any body can pin on a Turk,,
