It really depends on you:
-coffeeshops: yes, there's plenty. Yes, you can smoke pot.
And guess what: nobody cares except the kind of tourist who travels all the way here just to get stoned and giggle at a goldfish for 3 days.
The rest of us go to Amsterdam to see historic houses, visit world-class museums, ride a bicycle, eat Dutch pastries, visit great shops and quaint neighbourhoods.
- the Red Light District is just that: a district - Ăt's contained so it's not like you'll see hookers on every street corner. If you're not interested you can actually spend days in Amsterdam without once encountering a hooker.
- the Rivierenbuurt and Amsterdam Zuid are gorgeous, and the museums are phenomenal. Plenty of variety in eating and drinking, and once you're tired of the city you can take a train and be on a beach within 20 minutes. |

I loved Amsterday/also Rotterdam when I was there. The city is under sea level and that is sort of different.. seeing big ships seemingly just across the street. Lots of night life there. Be prepared, however, to see things a little expensive.. enjoy !!!! |

I know some people who have gone there. They said there's a lot of alcohol drinkers & pornography. I personally would not ever go there because of this. |

it depends on what you are planning to do when you're here really. There are great things like art museums, canals, lots of culture stuff and shops. But there are also bad things like the red light district and coffee shops. But it's not like you're gonna just randomly get stuck in one of those areas if you're not planning on it. So dont worry about that stuff. As long as ur friends dont wanna go there that is.
Also Id suggest really exploring more of Holland. Amsterdam is fun, but theres sooo much more cool stuff. |

Amsterdam is a must place to see, not just for the hash cafes, going a cruise on the canals is a must, some brilliant architecture to look at, people are friendly, the red light district will really open your eyes. was there 2 yrs ago and had a great time. |

if you like drugs, whores and drink.its very seedy in parts and can be intimidating at first. specially at night in the red light district, train station .
but you ll be ok if u watch ur purse and get acustum to the beggers pushers and cheats.
theirs a saying thou "their aint no harm in amsterdam" and i found it to be very true.
be wise and have fun |

Amsterdam is an amazing city. Ignore all the crap about drugs and prostitutes. That makes a minute percentage of what there is to see and do here. The city in itsself is beautiful. Something to see at every corner. There is TONS of culture. Everyone speaks english so it's VERY "user-friendly" and the canals reek of romance.
