Is Amsterdam as great as everyone "dreams" it will be?

The cafes.. Space Cake... THC..

That's all you ever here about in Amsterdam. I know the scenery is awesome, and it would be a great traveling stop.. but is all the cafe talk true? Are the cafes that awesome?

I just loved it, is one of my fav. cities in Europe. It's big but not too big, gorgeous, lot's of things to see, people are really nice-and attractive. Everyone rides a bicycle and they are so friendly. The channels are amazing...I just loved it, even if the days I spent there it rained non stop.

About the prostitutes area, I guess it's more fun if you're male. Even if I actually think it's a great idea to legalize prostitution son the women can have rights and social security. I find amazing all these men getting into the brothels as if it were the most normal thing in the world. I do confess that a was a bit surprised the women weren't prettier considering the general attractiveness of Dutch people. The prostitutes were actually quite ugly.
About the cafes, well...I tried the "special" cake and it did nothing to me. AND it was v. expensive for a muffin. Apparently the marijuana is v.strong, but I wouldn't be able to tell, because i don't smoke it v. often and we mixed with a lot of tobacco.

It's fascinating to walk through the red light district, but when you go to the coffee shop and smoke up, it pretty much feels the same as smoking up on your couch. Check out some of the museums when you go.

The ambiance in coffee shops is breathtaking and the people are almost always loose and cheerful. I love Amsterdam.

my sister recently spent 2 weeks there living with a family. she said the bars and everything were crazy, but it wasn't anything to die for. she liked paris a lot better. then again, everyone's taste is different, what works for one won't work for all.

Yes, it is awesome. No, the cafes aren't that great. They are like crappy bars...but, they sell marijuana, so that is pretty cool. You will see groups of American boys at the cafes, all drinking tons of beer and smoking marijuana. The marijuana is very good/of very high quality. But whether you are doing that or not, the scenery is beautiful. There are canals with boats lined up in them (think of the general scene we envision in Venice), there are tulips and beautiful old buildings. The shopping is fun, and the people are friendly. The streets with cafes are just "great" because there are a lot of people kind of "hanging out" outside all at once, but the cafes are not the highlight. I like to buy my weed at the cafes and then go to a nearby park or take a walk and smoke it. There is too much beauty within a very short walk too spend time in those dingy cafes. I hope that helps.

Nothing special there, there are no dutch people there anyways, just immigrants. I think all the Dutch moved to Aruba and USA

Love it, but it does get kind of old if all you want to do is get high. The best cafe by far is the Rokerij in Leidseplien area of Am'dam. Also the museums are great!

Amsterdam is a beautiful city, I was born there, and am very homesick for it. It really bothers me that all you people want to go there just to use drugs and get drunk. The local people do not use drugs or get drunk, just the tourist. The red light district is also for tourists. Enjoy the beautiful city! Good buy.

they are awesome because you can smoke pot in them, but most people I know who went to Amsterdam, didn't like it. They said it was actually pretty boring once you get over the pot and prostitute thing. There are really nice museums in Amsterdam, but I don't think that's what you're into right?

b_furbee21
YES!!!! Never better! Everything is awesome! The Cafe's are awesome! Everything is....you'll never find anything like that anywhere else!!!! I promise! You have to be into that kind of thing though...it sounds like you are! I'll have to get some names of places and get back with you my husband knows all the great places to visit!

hu_mira
Yes it's true, it's great! Visit the coffee shop at the red light district, there really awesome.

The coffee shops are all over Holland, not onley in Amsterdam btw.

its not disneyworld for older kids. be careful. its a major city with major crime. but yes, everything you've heard is true. you can find anything you want.
