It's for FOOD! Best food I've ever eaten - the saying goes you get French food in German portions but it is far far better than that. A steak/frites followed by Dame Blanche - wish I was there now! And any serious beer drinker could tell you that it also has excellent beer. I just stick to Leffe Blonde as I like to be able to walk home afterwards.
And the people are nice, too. Have you ever been?!?

Historically Belgium is created because it is to strategically located that no big European country could occupy it without the others would made war about it.
It is called the Battlefield of Europe and a lot of famous battles were fought in it (starting with Julius Caesar, the German tribes, Viking, French, Bourgondy, Germans, Spanjars, Autrians, Dutch, English, ...).
Centuries it formed the natural way to pass from France to Germany.
When the Belgians had enough to be occupied in 1930, the great countries of that time found it a good solution to have a buffer state.

During the centuries the Belgians have developped a very fine cuisine and the best beers of the world (only for that it's already worth to exists).
They provided the world with some of the most famous painters (like Van Eyck, Breughel, Rubens, Van Dyck, ...).

I think that there a far more "pointless" countries in the world.

I went in a Belgian supermarket once, and they were very unhelpful just because I was trying to pay in French money! Couldn't they see I was English, damn it?
