Europe. It is always classed as European. |

1. Geographically, Cyprus is in Asia.
2. Culturally, Cyprus is in Europe and Asia. The internationally recognised "Republic of Cyprus" (populated by Greek Cypriots) is European, while the illegally occupied "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (populated by Anatolian Turks and Turkish Cypriots) is Asian.
3. Politically, the "Republic of Cyprus" is European and a member of the European Union. The illegally occupied "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is not recognised by any country other than Turkey, therefore it doesn't really have any (international) political status. |

Although geographically located in Asia (Middle East) Cyprus has more ties to Europe than to Asia being member of the Council of Europe, the European Union, the European Economic Area, the Eurozone, and having signed the Schengen agreement.

The borders between Europe and Asia are not so clear many times, especially as the European countries are more eastwards, to say if they belong to Europe or Asia become more difficult...
A lot of times politicians and other people tried to make clear if Cyprus should be considered European or Asian, and still today there are a lot of controversies... While from a historic and cultural point of view, it seems to belong to Europe rather than Asia ( and this thesis has been confirmed when it became a member of EU), from a geographical point of view it seems to belong to Asia because of its nearness to this continent... So , at present it is considered both European and Asian ( it depends on the cases)...

Geographically Cyprus really does belong to Asia.
But the Republic of Cyprus (Southern part of the Island) belongs to the European Union, greek is spoken there.
The Turkish-controlled area in the north (since 1974), calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (which is recognised only by Turkey) belongs to Turkey and therefore is not part of the European Union.
I hope I could help you out. |
