I agree with Vasiliki. People from the Mediterranean are usually tanner in skin color. Italians, Spanish, Greeks are naturally and usually tanner.
But its not always the case. My best friend's family is Greek and they are all blond with blue eyes. It just depends on genes, I guess.

Well, since there was a theory during Nazi Germany that even Hitler approved saying German people came from ancient Greeks, I cannot understand why your friends said these things.
Most Greeks are white, some of them a bit darker in certain areas (Crete for example), very similar to Italian people. Are Italians black? Not at all.
However, you can find in big cities (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras) some black people: they are immigrants from Pakistan, Middle East and Northern Africa.
