Is Holland a country or a region in the Netherlands?

Show all answers

Vince has left the building...
It is both; It's a region in the country the Netherlands and it's the unofficial nickname for the entire country.

The reason for this is historical. Back in the 1700's when Holland/The Netherlands was a superpower it was called the United States of the Netherlands and Holland was then the most important and most wealthy state in the country that back then also included what is now Belgium and Luxemburg as well as many overseas territories/colonies (Indonesia, Surinam, New Guinea, South-Africa and parts of the USA to name a few)

Holland is actually the name for two of the (twelve) provinces in the Netherlands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands...
- "Noord Holland" (in English, "North Holland" where Amsterdam is located within)
- "Zuid Holland" ("South Holland" where Den Haag/The Hague is located within)

The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam. Den Haag http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague is where the government resides.

So the correct name is the Netherlands, but is still often referred to as Holland - especially with regard to supporting the national team such as with the football

Annamazing.!
i always thought holland was a country :/
