Do you think such patient people will harm you? Besides we have better things to do than run along like wild with a burning American flag in our hands hunting down American tourists all around the country. You'll be ashamed of your ignorance when you arrive to Istanbul and when you see how safe it is.

Generally speaking, no place is safe if you play the dumb traveller but speaking as a person with a good head on my shoulders, Turkey is one of the few places I've travelled to where I feel the most safe. The other being Azerbaijan. If I had security concerns I wouldn't be sending my 12 year old son there alone along with a couple of friends. He will be arriving in Istanbul on the 19th.

Ipek K
Yes it is.

Don't worry, you are not the first American who will be visiting İstanbul.

there will surely be a lot of american travellers, tourists from whole world apart from you, so it is pretty safe don't worry.
but be careful about bag snatchers, drug addicts and traffic
eat fish, drink raki, enjoy the view, take photos and turn back to US

? ? ? I. A. ? ? ?
I suppose it's safer than certain neighbourhoods in the Bronx or East LA...

No, we'll eat you alive and take all your money...of course it's safe! :-) Do you think an American citizen like me would be living in Turkey for the summer if it wasn't?

The first few posts show that the prejudice Westerners have against Turks is much stronger than the prejudice Turks have against Americans.

If you have any doubt, just ask the many Americans working in various private schools and companies.

Of course, it's safe. Istanbul thrives on tourism and Americans are known as fairly decent spenders and valued for their likelyhood to tip service personnel. I have lived here for four years and have never encountered anyone who was offended by my nationality. Folks may be offended by American politics, but then ....
You may find that many Turks have already been to America or are hoping to visit in the future.

Most of us may be angry with Bush, but it's not about the American people. Tourists-our guests- are always welcome, whatever their nationality is. It's safer than your country, don't worry.

yes, you only have to watch out for pick pocket (sometimes little boys) on Istiklal street.
If that is your only problem then you are safe.

Yes, Istanbul is safe for American Travelers. I'm sure you could even run around with an american flag sewn onto your backpack or clothing and most people would not care. However you may get into more political discussions than you care to hear. The major annoyances are the carpet boys, but I had absolutely no problems when I was there this year.
